muppet: I can't understand why you're not able to use the Vodafone SMTP server.

Surely it shouldn't care what the "from" address is, as long as you're coming from a mobile IP address you should be free to send mail from and to whom you please.

Or have Vodafone setup their SMTP servers strangely?

Many systems calculate a value for how likely an email is to be spam, they use a barrage of tests that include: HELO/EHLO checking, PTR/Reverse DNS recording, SPF and domain keys... some of those are going to fail when you sending from xyz@yourdomain.co.nz via smtp.yourrandomisp.co.nz which will add to the "spam value" calculated for your message.

Sending from xyz@yourdomain.co.nz via smtp.vodafone.co.nz is a great way to find your email in your intended recipients junk folder or filtered out completely by many anti spam systems

Of course, that's not my point.  It should actually work, shouldn't it?

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.

Probably allows closed relaying, ie: only allow certain ip addresses to use it and requires authentication/login.

Should work if setup correctly.  Wouldn't recommend bothering to use it though, sort out a proper smtp server related to the domain.

I did try this and vodafone's smtp server rejected the from address.  Hence my search for other solutions.

What form of authentication .. ? AUTH ?

So, if I get this guy to setup smtp authentication using whatever is the supported method, it will then allow him to use whatever from address he wants?

Is there a web page that describes the steps?

Thanks,

I tried all the gmail settings as above ... and nothing works. Still sends as the gmail account.

The user doesn't know what his vodafone account settings are so I could not setup that for him.

Jangosmtp relay does work .. that's what we'll be going with for now.

Their docs should say that new account address is what is used to send email with ... I had assumed it would take the registered address.
