GH33: Whhat's a glorified semi-smartphone?

A blackberry without going onto the Blackberry Enterprise Server (BES) is pretty much only good as a phone, and able to sync up to your PC when you plug it in (ie glorified semi-smartphone).

A imported Blackberry probably won't work with Vodafone on their BES service (as they only support NZ Blackberrys from memory).

So you won't get any of the e-mail/calendar sync niceness.  So better to go for an Android/iPhone if you want to buy a smartphone overseas.
