Should be fine. We have been buying phones from HK for years. You just have to remember to change the mms settings and data settings for smartphones.

If neither of you have confidence with phone settings, you'd be better off getting phone in NZ as you'll get the support from Vodafone. Vodafone doesn't support parallel imported or self imported phones.

I completely agree with chiefie but I was talking about

If you plan on getting a smartphone:

* the settings for the phone connecting to the internet ie Vodafone

* mms settings (picture message)

But if you'll just get a cheap nokia or something there shouldn't be any problems and don't need to do this unlesss you really want to send a receive sms with pictures in them (mms)

hmz I never had a problem of editing APN or MMS setting. just insert voda sim and all setting are there. happened to number of the phones I owned.

So that should not be a problem at all.

...but if you are only getting a cheap nokia or something then the savongs will probably be next to nothing.  better to spend the extra $20 or so, buy the phone in NZ and get all the support and warranty etc

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Blackberry is out if you want to make good use of blackberry service. Otherwise it's a glorified semi-smartphone.

It works in New Zealand.

For my opinion, you only get a GST free (15% less) smart phone if you buy a smart phone in HK.

I like buying electronic devices in NZ because of the warranty.

Okay so i would not get full use of a blackberry in NZ.
What about a 3G phone?

Is it a good idea or not?

Not necessarily. Yes you get the 15% savings but you also get the exchange rate savings!!

for example here the iPhone outright is NZ$ 1,123.00 (Apple NZ) BUT
in Hong Kong it's HK$5,230 which would be 859.588 NZD at the current exchange rate so there is quite a bit of a savings there.

Also I recently bought a Macbook Pro in Hong Kong and saved $800 (if you want to check it was the 15inch entry level) plus the warranty is international.

So i wouldn't agree only the 15% savings.

Maybe you should start by deciding what model phone you want. Low end phones are just as cheap here.

Would depend entirely if you could find one in Hong Kong. They're an obsolete phone so it might be hard to find stock, many stores only carry late model phones.

They're still a current phone in production.

$299 is about what you'll pay in HK from the quick search I done.
