Jama: It would be a bummer if your 'home zone' was one poxy little overloaded cell site and you needed to call 111. Oh well just like TXT messaging life is cheap.

But the PSTN network is now managed in the same way. TCL here in Wgtn/Chch and newer parts of Telecom's network there are fibre fed roadside cabinets where there isn't the capacity for everybody fed off a cabinet to make a call at once unlike the old days where every phoneline ran straight back to the exchange.

and as mentioned by some one else above, I can connect to multiple cell sites within my house.
How they going to do this? Seems like it will be a nightmare to manage.

The more cellsites the better. The network knows the location of your phone by triangulating the signal strength from one or more cellsites. Since Vodafone generally have sectorised sites each cellsite is divided up in 120 degree sectors it's easy from a network level to know the location of the phone within a sector.

Even smarter than that there is the 4 finger rake and Pseudo Noise Offset (PN Offset) to know where you are. One of those Qualcomm inventions adopted by the GSM (WCDMA) world.

simon_nz90, if I were a moderator here, I would ask you to change you're tone... if you don't like ignorance you must hate yourself... not understanding that people ask questions to gain knowledge is just as ignorant as insulting them for doing so...

using caps and bold? pity the fool...

back on topic... personally I think this is a good thing for both TNZ and Voda...and customers... unless the TSO and free local calling disappear. there are large numbers of NZers who don't earn a lot of money... the price of calling overall may drop, but I doubt it, companies don't enter markets to save customers money remember...
