This article appears today in the herald.
Looks like you will be able to use your Vodafone for local calls.

Does any one know what technology will be employed to achieve this?
How would cellular provider know when someone is actually in their own home?
Tri-angulate the cell sites?  Very broad area of coverage then.
Interested to know....

With all the blows Telecom has been dished...it makes you wonder when or if the Government will dispose of KiwiShare...

I'd like to know this too. How would it know if i was at home? Sometimes my phone connects to the Takapuna base station, sometimes Hillcrest, sometimes Northcote and very rarely, Auckland Harbour lol

The current TSO effectively becomes obsolete once Telecom launch their NGN anyway. Having said that it should have been dumped years ago, all it's really doing is retaining free local calling, something large numbers of people simply don't care about any longer. I believe with the launch of the NGN we'll see home line calls packaged in similair ways to mobiles, ie $x.xx per month for rental + 300 mins of calls anywhere in NZ. Telecom can't currently do this but within a couple of years the threat from VoIP and mobile is going to force them to do such things.

Regardless of which site you connect to the network still knows your location.

Yes but that would mean free local calling within that cell site which is a huge area compared to your own home?

What about incoming calls from land lines? Will the caller have to pay landline to mobile rates even when you're at home? This is more of a thought than a serious question. We'll have to wait and see.

While in your Homezone you would not pay for incoming calls

NO

Havn't you read the news lately? The Commerce Commission just announced that the interconnection fees from Vodafone local calling zones to Telecom landlines and vice versa will be ZERO - thats the whole point of this forum.... look at the title!!

That means if a Telecom landline user calls a Vodafone local calling number, they wont pay anything!!

Cheers John. A far more polite response than the post after yours. I missed the detail when I scanned the news article.

I don't have a landline right now, and I feel that I get better value out of Vodafone's national free minutes than I would ever get out of free local calling. I suspect that this applies to most telecommunications users, but free local calling is a political hot potato due to the misguided perception that Telecom will rape and pillage us all if free local calling is withdrawn. For that reason, I think that the Kiwi Share agreement will remain.

Remember, folks, the government doesn't exist to do what's best for telecommunications users. The government exists only to win votes.

It would be a bummer if your 'home zone' was one poxy little overloaded cell site and you needed to call 111. Oh well just like TXT messaging life is cheap.
