If you use data then I'd agree yes.

I can't see how a "shared data/multiple sim" option is of any benefit to a user? Given a lot of smartphones wifi hotspot you can easily share your data cap (and buy the less expensive hardware i.e. wifi ipad instead of 3g ipad), logic says you can only be in one place at a time
Multiple sim data sharing sounds like a way to cheat the provider?

OK so heres a couple of scenarios.
- Small Business with 3G devices. User data requirements vary depending upon the task they're on
- You have a 3G router for your Broadband connection, in your office, and a 3G handset. Why not share the dataplan across the devices on a single account rather than have 2 data accounts with 2 data limits and have to try and balance the usage?
- You have a 3G handset and a Laptop/tablet with an inbuilt 3G modem. Again, as above, why have 2 accounts
- Worst case (perhaps) you have your 3G router for BB and you have a smartphone and a 3G capable laptop/tablet... that'd be 3 Sims then????

Using your handset as a hotspot is great if you need to but not something you'd want to do regularly for longer periods. Simply because your battery wouldn't last.

It's NOT a way to cheat the provider (You won't be using any data you haven't paid for) it's a way to best utilize the services effectively by not paying for data allowances you won't fully use.

I suppose a family plan that allows a individual to buy a quantity of minutes/texts/data and for this to all be shared across multiple users could possibly be a good idea (until one of the kids uses the total allocation of minutes while the other kid consumes all the 3G data :P)

Its a good analogy.. VF offer their voice and txt packs across a group (Family) so why not offer a lump of data across a group too???

Wifi hotspot is an annoying way of solving the problem and it does not work perfectly either.

Wifi hotspot is an annoying way of solving the problem and it does not work perfectly either.

Especially if you have an iPhone 4 eh? ;) .

But yes, I have a few devices, all with multiple data plans on them. It would be nice to lump it all into one plan.

The biggest problem I have is using wifi hotspot with my nexus s and my laptop. Once I get it working, the speeds are great but my phone starts to get quite hot and would lose 50% of its battery in under an hour.

Not good for when I'm on the road/clients premises and my phone dies.

Also, keeping it plugged in does not much good either as the battery drains faster than it charges.

VF and Telecom XT I believe do a plan sharing but it is quite expensive compared to getting 2-3 plans by themselves. I think it is more suited to more than 3 phones.

Watched the voda announcements forum as mentioned but there are no new posts there at all. But from comments in other threads I see the new voda plans are out now.

Looking at the new smart plans I see they now offer a 1 month term, 250MB is included for smart1 (1GB free for the first six months, Additional data @20c/MB for smart 1). Free minutes looks like 100 free anytime, but instead of "anytime minutes" the new plan page says "Any net mins" - I don't understand - is that just a typo?

If correct, I'm very happy with that to start with on the new one month term and will finally switch to a smart1 with Vodafone. May switch to a 12 later. Congratulations voda marketing : ) it worked for me at least.

Separately from this I'd like to take the opportunity to thank johnr for his input, many times I have found useful voda information posted here : ).

[Edit: I can buy additional 1GB data packs on a smart plan. There was a cross next to 'on account' and I misread that to mean all account plans. Removed previous comment related to that.]

I too was thinking of signing up prior to the 23rd but decided not to do so in the end just to see the new exciting plans.They'd better be good .

My expectation is that vodafone will increase data/free call allowances a little, and telecom will match them. Then, I will promptly port both my sim's to telecom (I cannot get reliable 3g service from vodafone). Telecom is a little more expensive than vodafone at this time.

The 'magic' bullet for cellular providers IMHO, will be a 'shared data' plan for customers with multiple devices (eg iphone/ipad/laptop). So, I can have a simcard in each one and they share the same data cap.

The new plans are too light on data. No change, really. Just lots MORE minutes I don't use anyway.

I canned my Smart 3 account today and went back to pre-pay. I'd rather have the $81 / month.
