I have read in different places that if I sign up to a voda smart1 plan before august 23rd (today) I will get 3GB data for the life of the plan. Is that correct?

The actual text on the website ("All new Smart customers will enjoy 3GB of data and 1000 PXTs per month until the 23rd of August 2011") gives the impression after signing and after the 23rd you are back to the standard 250mb.

Also, I already have a smart phone so will I get a credit instead of a handset subsidy?

If you search the forum you'll see a bit on this.
Yes you'll still get 3Gigs for your plan.
Plans are going to change in some 'exciting' way, probably from 1 Sept is my guess.  So you need to decide if you want to lock in 3gigs of data today(if it's not too late) or wait a bit and see what the 'exciting' bit is.
(But don't expect it to include 3gigs of data is my guess)

No. It's only for selected phones anyway i.e. their most expensive phones.

Where's this "new exciting" thing they mentioned - the 23rd has come and gone?

I just spoke to a CSR @ VF and nothing yet that they know about. And the promo has indeed ended yesterday too :(

I may regret missing that. I'm not expecting any replacement offer to be as good, but i'm willing to be surprised. Things marketing people describe as 'exciting' are rarely so exciting for the rest of us ;  )

I too was thinking of signing up prior to the 23rd but decided not to do so in the end just to see the new exciting plans. They'd better be good .

My expectation is that vodafone will increase data/free call allowances a little, and telecom will match them.   Then, I will promptly port both my sim's to telecom (I cannot get reliable 3g service from vodafone). Telecom is a little more expensive than vodafone at this time.

The 'magic' bullet for cellular providers IMHO, will be a 'shared data' plan for customers with multiple devices (eg iphone/ipad/laptop). So, I can have a simcard in each one and they share the same data cap.

I think those that have the 3gb for life will be the happiest in the end :P

I can't see how a "shared data/multiple sim" option is of any benefit to a user? Given a lot of smartphones wifi hotspot you can easily share your data cap (and buy the less expensive hardware i.e. wifi ipad instead of 3g ipad), logic says you can only be in one place at a time

Multiple sim data sharing sounds like a way to cheat the provider?

I suppose a family plan that allows a individual to buy a quantity of minutes/texts/data and for this to all be shared across multiple users could possibly be a good idea (until one of the kids uses the total allocation of minutes while the other kid consumes all the 3G data :P)

I just wish they would tell us what the new stuff is.

This is vodafone marketing at its best again. They gave a deadline of the 23rd, website still saying 3gigs of data with a offer that has now expired.

Really it can't be that hard to sort out a promo, set the website to update on the day you say it will be ready.

Yep just checked at 1.30pm today and it still has this on the website
"*Smart promotion: All new Smart customers will enjoy 3GB of data and 1000 PXTs per month until the 23rd of August 2011. See theTerms & Conditions for this offer."

Its like the marketing department at vodafone just sit there drink coffee and then look at each other and say "was there something we had to do today?"

No, I don't think so. We'll just have to wait.
