Morph:
1eStar: We have Internet/homeline with Telstra Clear. I am hoping to retain our number when we move house next year. We will still be in the same city but on an adjacent exchange. Is it possible to move the number with us? Or is this dependant on exchange/telephony provider?

Thanks

If you are or are going to move to an address  the cable network then its not a problem in most cases ( as the cable network doesn't use exchanges) ,

Interesting - when I moved from Paparangi (Johnsonville for those uninitiated with the progressive suburbs...) to Kapiti (cable -> cable), was told I couldn't keep the same number.

Would be rather annoyed to find out that this wasn't the case (although I did change from 938-xxxx to 905-xxxx so perhaps I had to?)

Yes, you would have to, as in that case those are on separate exchanges. If you were staying in the Wellington area (even if you were moving near the airport or to Upper Hutt) you would have been able to keep said number.

Kapiti and Wellington are not within the same LCA or LICA. In a nutshell the rules say you can't move a number into a different toll calling area. This is a completely different scenario to wanting to port or move a number between suburbs in the LCA / LICA. Had you approached TelstraClear for a Customerlink / Call forward they would have been able to enable this between your old Wellington LCA number and your new Kapiti LCA number, for a cost.

TelstreaClear's HFC network also does have exchanges, unlike Telecom however they don't have a switch in every suburb.

Good info to know - thanks! As it turned out they redirected our number for free for 3 months or so. Well that was what it was supposed to be, turned out that about a year and a half later it was still being redirected so can't complain I guess! :)

If you switched to something like Xnet Fusion, Orcon Genius or Slingshot italk you could most definitely keep your number (even if you changed cities too if you were sneaky!)
