jermsie: So we currently can't get Freeview TV at our rental because the lounge is only wired for TelstraClear cable. I checked out their website to see how much a basic Freeview service is and they're charging $55.95 for basic Freeview plus a $200 install. Am I missing something here or is that incredibly expensive for a basic service?

Sky is probably cheaper, for skys basic package, and that way you are not dealing with a reseller. BUt getting a freeview UHF aerial would be your best option, and if no signal, you can get satellite freeview.

Matt, dont too sure what complex the OP is in, but in Wellington there are a number of complex's where TCL has been reticulated throughout, and body corp rules prevent the addition of antennas and dishs. So your only option is to go with TCL.

One of these complexes has the added complexity in that they have HFC command over the complex but no phone lines, so you have to have TV with TCL (including for FTA) and phone via Telecom, BB you can take from either.

Personally I think there is a case for having TCL distribute the DVB-T muxs over the HFC (now the analog channels have been removed) in these buildings, I am sure its not too hard to do and regularly done in Europe, but I would not hold my breath.

I guess it makes commercial sense not to provide anything free... I don't hold it against them, just the price.

Hi Jermsie, while in a way I agree with you I think the combination of a single Telco providing services on commercial terms that 99.9% of the rest of citizens can get at no cost, and a body corp that supports that stance but refusing to allow antennas or other ways to recieve services is unfair.

I used to install MATV systems in the welly district and feilded many calls from tenants in these complex's who felt hard done by, but typically there is nothing you can do to get around it.

As mentioned earlier, at least when Sky provision a complex they normally make allowance for FTA/FreeView reception, even if that incurs an upfront cost to the complex development.

A b it simplistic but what about rabbit's ears?  You could pick up some at Dick Smiths, try it out and if it works you're golden. If not then you can return.

I have managed to get FreeviewHD using rabbit's ears in the Wellington CBD.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

Yeah a mate just told me he uses boosted rabbit ears on his plasma tv with built in tuner. Might investigate further.

Hi there

I guess this has been kinda answered, but when TCL switched off their FTA over cable service we were left with a dud  second TV ( we were running a cable from the main TV/decoder and it worked well.)

Anyways - I brought a Freeview STB off Trademe and one of those indoor UHF powered arials from HN ( http://www.oneforall.com/en_NZ/product/159/sv-9325 ).

Plonked it on a windowsill and haven't looked back.

Arial was ~$70 IIRC

(edited for URL coding and at least one spelling mistake - there are probably more Cool)

Hi, thats good if your in a good UHF reception area, but in some parts of wellington (thinking of island bay site) its not so good, then the wheels fall off. Just like the site I mentioned at the bottom of Onslow Rd where they cannot see UHF service and are trapped in TCL hell.

But the positive is that we live in a egalitarian community where simple injustice and slight of hand by large corporates cannot take place.

Cheers

If you are up high, a little aerial maybe enough. I am on a second level, and the cheap usb tv stick I have got in my computer works perfectly with just the basic 15cm aerial it came with.

Update

TelstraClear have kindly offered us a deal for their basic digital service. Saves us having to deal with property managers and getting a UHF install. Should be connected on Thursday.
