davidcole: hmm, would be good to go in there and set the channel on one of their big flash plasma screens to a really horrible looking channel and see if anyone notices the difference between composite and s-video (or compenent).

There decoders only have s-video, no component output yet!

My one doesn't even have that!!!

Any idea what the policy is on upgrading decoders??  Can I just ask for a new one?

Well, somebody had to remind the NZ public that Broadband is about being connected to the world, and not nerds in a black van.... ;-)

And as far as I can see, Cable TV is still the only triple-play game in town.....

Hmmm... Great broadband speeds but grainy Cable TV. Now's good.

Nice pictures Mauricio...  They look much better than you could have managed to get with a spy-cam stuffed inside your jacket  :P

Did the manager at last see reason and allow you to take some pics?

Cheers,
Grant.

I didn't take the pictures. TelstraClear read this post and supplied then. And apparently told the store manager about us...

Awesome, feels like TCL is slowly warming up to the acceptace of Geekzone or online community, and listen to the public voice and act accordingly. This is good, this will sure give TCL the two thumbs up for listening to the outer voices...

Keep up the great work TCL!

I went to visit the site on Sunday. As the pictures attest, it's quite nicely laid out. Interestingly all the computers (that I could see) are Macs!  I talked about some slowdown in speeds I had been getting one of the reps there did a speed test on his machine (can't do it from the ones the public can use). He tested two sites (his speed he said was 4Mbs/2Mbs). On a local site we were getting about that speed but when we went to a US site, download dropped to about 1.5Mbs and upload was 800Kbs). So I guess it's not just me at home :-)

The rep seemed fairly knowledgeable and enthusiastic.  Good for TCL

This is normal. Anything outside the ISPs network is out of their control and can have different speeds. We don't know if the server on the other side has bandwidth problems, do we?

So, I would take any test with overseas servers with a grain of salt.

I believe you can just swap them. Ring and ask.

When I was there they were on TV1 showing the motor sports. The PQ was no better nor worse than I get at home. I doubt if they would have them tuned to something like E! which is a really terribly compressed and soft channel with tons of MPEG artifacts. Or even TV3 which is just an OTA signal cleaned up and retransmitted.

Didn't know you could get a new decoder though I doubt the difference between composite and s-video would be that noticeable.

That would be the best way or you could go into the store if you want to talk face to face with someone. They have a few deals going on as well like free install and no term contract for signing up instore. There is also a lucky dip prize if you sign up in October, the major prize is like $1000.

I just went in and was offered the switch from analogue to digital for free... I jumped on it. I have been wanting to switch for some time but was not willing to pay $99 + $5 a month to get digital. Not when the decoders only have composite out and I have been a faithful customer since the service went in. But with the $99 dollars waived and s-video out on the STB it is worthwhile.

I was also interested that the guy I was talking to mentioned HDTV.. Apparently they will be releasing a service but are just waiting for Sky to release the details first.
