cleggy2: drawback is I signed a 12mth contract, mind you I have been a tc customer for about 8 years.

pfft.... 12 months at a time... I considered that 2 year deal to get a free tbox recently.. but after all the bad press about that box I'm not game to have that crap in my house. WAF.

Ya, I agree. But not everyone thinks the way we do. Some don't take customers and the net personally, to them it's just a numbers game.

I have two personally signed letters on my desk from the CEO and in one he points out we have choice, well that's not always right either, but in spirit he has a point, we do have choice.

Me, my answer is if you don't like it then make your own ISP... but that's not a simple task, nor is finding one you like.

it was a leaflet drop, you were offered home phone with 10 Gb broadband from $85 a month saving $10, so you can get up to 100Gb a month, free connection, free wireless modem and choose a free gift. A tivo, free calling to a nz landline or Telecom mobile with my favourites for 12 months or half price calling to Aussie or NZ with talk it up downunder just $9 pm for 12 months and you had to call 0800 444 123 and quote "Connect 10" this was plasted all over Rotorua so not sure about other areas.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

The moden I got is a Netcomm NB304N. Seems a good modem with usb to plug in a hard drive etc

don't really see that this is such a big deal.
Companies do this all the time. Not just telcos, power companies do it, sky does it, banks do it, and so on. It's standard practice to win new customers.

Don't really see that it is unfair either. You signed up for Telstraclear before and you knew how much they charged and what they would give you for that money. That hasn't changed (in fact if you signed up more than about 6 months ago then you have recieved a better plan than you signed up for already as they put the datacaps up for no extra charge!). Yet now, because they are offering a different price to someone else, you feel some kind of unfairness - even though your situation has gotten no worse (in fact it has gotten better!)

No doubt you also got some kind of an incentive to sign up at the time too which you have conveniently forgotten about.

We've just been connected to this and so far not too happy with the speeds.

On Xnet we consistantly got around 6mbps download at any time of the day or night.
So far on TC (only been a couple of days) we've been getting around 6mbps during the day / offpeak but less than 2mbps during peak times / at night.
We can't get ADSL2 here as too far out of Whangarei.

Did I do the right thing???

We also got a Netcomm NB304N router but it's wireless signal strength is not as good as the Belkin Wireless N router we were using.

Consumers should shop around whenever they are out of contract, in NZ there is a lot of apathy and reluctance to change ISP that allows companies to get away with offering promo's to new customers and not to existing customers out of contract.

I can't stand people that go on about loyalty blah blah blah, give me a better deal, blah blah blah.
It isn't LOYALTY people!! It is a business transaction. You pay them money, they give you a product/service. You signed up for deal xyz. You obviously thought xyz was a good deal at the time. There is now a better deal, GET OVER IT!! If you can't, change.

Loyalty is an allegiance or commitment to someone or thing that you feel passionate about. It's not something you can buy.

Loyalty is what you give to your family or best friend, sports team etc, not your utilities.

If you are not happy with the price you are paying, buy somewhere else, period.

I was already getting 40gb a month but decided to call them and see if they would give me the monthly discount. They said no at first but he was nice enough and changed me over. I'd say, don't be rude and just let them know that you're disappointed.

If I get offered a free TiVo I would switch, no question.

I joined TelstraClear a week back with new plan of $75/mo which includes 40gig+Homeline (with AKL wide free calling to landlines)+Wireless modem/router. The term is 12 months,w ith ETC as $199 and $80 joining fee. First two mont rent is free. So in all, new customers save $60. The mode/router is NetComm RTA1025W (N series). Pretty happy with speeds at 1.5 MB/s. :)

Otaku I think it's a little more then that:

$75 X 2 (months free) = $150 + $150 (for the modem) + 12 months X $30 savings (the cost of 40Gb usage which is free for 12 months) = $660 savings

Thanks very much to all posters - including those that told me not to moan on etc etc, democracy is a good thing IMHO.
Telstraclear have switched me onto the new plan, were very courteous and helpful as ever so, yeah, all's well that ends well.

For sure, I'm on a contract once again but, hey, that has never bothered me when I feel I'm being treated like a person rather than simply a number.

I think many consumers know just how wrong it can all go.

I confess I stuff up this week. I expected to be able to terminate one service and start up a new one in the same breath... I was very wrong. The site had to be without any service for 3 days.

That's the sort of stuff customers fear. So they stay because change can leave them very frustrated without service.

While Neils personal comments last night about VDSL not being worth another $50 a month to many consumers, was very interesting, I think that many consumers just don't see a saving of $20 a month as being worth the hassle of changing.

There has to be a real value proposition and a $20 saving just isn't it most of the time.
