Eva888: I’ve just spoken with Sky. They are offering 25% off. In my case it worked out that Sky Starter and Entertainment package plus My Sky would cost me the same as what I’m paying to VF now. This would only be for 12 months, after which the price would go up, essentially by the cost of the My Sky box which would then cost around $16. The offer is only open to the Tbox migration customers for a limited time.

Sky will give you a dish and basic installation if you don’t have a dish, which has answered one of the burning questions.

So just to clarify.

1 Vodafone will still provide a number of Sky package with VTV (subject of course to the published recording limits) at the time of upgrade of T-Box.  They will be delivered on the HFC. Yes?

2 Alternatively Sky will provide  at a discount and arrange installation at the same time as the T-Box is removed a dish plus My Sky recorders and elected packages Yes?

Yes with the VTV you choose how many units of Sky you want or had before and it will cost you accordingly. When my VTV changeover was negotiated it included sky starter and entertainment. Others may have sport or movies add ons. If you only have freeview, you can add Sky later.

Yes to the Sky question but if you go down this path it’s best you speak directly to the special VF migration team at Sky. They were very helpful. Don’t forget their discounted deal is only for 12 months and I forgot to ask if you are locked in under contract for that period. Most probably.

Thanks for that confirmation.

Good to see options. Kudos to Vodafone to try to come up with some solution to satisfy some people and try to deliver it at the same time as the T-Box removal..

Of course there was always the option to get Sky independently of the VTV upgrade to get the Hard Drive recording of programs.

As mentioned before I am happy camper with the upgrade and VTV box and conditions even while I resolve download speed issue.  Currently 572 Mbps at Wellington server :-) .

Don't do speedtests and hey presto it will be resolved.

Just a report on my experiences.

Had Sky call, at the time not a plan I wanted, so all good.
Then the call with Vodafone, going with basic vtv, and the broadband upgrade, dropping the landline, new dollars of $63, giving me a nice saving.
Downers called, booked time.
Today, tech arrived, upgraded or did something to the box under the house, changed the modem to a newer one, added the Voda phone router, removed the Tbox, and installed the vtv.
All the was working well, pleasant experience all round.
Next step for me was to drop the provided router and get mine in there, setting the vlan to 10, priority 0, after a bit of reading (thanks geekzone forums), we got it up and running.

Network speeds at the moment are kicking 400Mbs down (up from 50Mbs) and 100Mbs down (up from 2Mbs). Kids haven’t noticed the change, and the vtv has been going well, if not better than what we had prior.

Thanks Voda, this family is currently happy.

Options are always good, but it does feel like the VTV needs more love and Hamish needs more support. Until these services can be offered without need of a box, safely integrated with a TV (meaning support isn't dropped after 3 years rendering your smart tv stupid), the little sagem box is actually very good. I'm surprised it needs at much power as it does, but its tiny and the remote is radio controlled, meaning it can be neatly connected and then hidden away never to be seen again.

Funnily enough I havent missed the recording function - although not being able to playback NZ FTA channels is _really_ bloody minded of those companies and annoying (their standalone apps are just not good enough) - but being able to restart a channel without having to have it buffered first is quite handy.

Are you testing using ethernet?

Have you tried doing a speed test using the provided router? On our HFC with the provided router we can get over 900 down.

Also be sure to use the speedtest APP (not the website) on a windows pc or mac, the website / browser can sometimes struggle with the higher speeds)

VTV Using WiFi

With the upcoming changeover I am a little concerned about the successful use of connecting the VTV via WiFi. We do not have ethernet near the TV.

Can I get this information from the Vodafone Tech before any attempt is made to use WiFi for this connection.

Yes using ethernet (cat 5e) to the supplied Ultrahub  (router) and the Speedtest app to the Vodafone server in Wellington. 567 download and 103 upload at 4.30pm.

Yes. He did not seem to expect ethernet was available

I had run ethernet to the VTV box  but there was problem with the cable ( fixed after the tech left) so he set it up with Wi-fi. We had no problem with Wifi. For some reason he used a UX2190 to get the Wifi signal and connected that to the VTV box with a ethernet cable. Of course it is now redundant as I replaced the ethernet from the router.

Thanks. I have been unable to find out what channels can't be recorded. especially on 1,2, and 3. Have you found this to be a problem?.

Got my grandfathers upgrade offer done, but not a smooth venture at all.

Letter could be clearer, really pushes the recipient to contact SKY about the TV services which royaly confused him.

Also calling the 0800 number in the letter resulted in speaking to two VF agents who both kept pushing him to talk to SKY to sort the TV side of things (despite asking for Vodafone TV) and that this was the only option. Third call and agent finally knew what the hell was going on.

On the plus side, he's now saving $30~ per month and getting faster internet. We'll see how he likes the Vodafone TV box (haven't brought up the potential recording restrictions yet), but I think think it is the best all in one option on the market right now.

An update for those interested:

  • Upgrade offer was confirmed by phone on the 6/04, told a confirmation email would be sent
  • Confirmation email arrives on 8/04, but only for a phone upgrade. No mention of TV services
  • After multiple tries and disconnections, finally gets through on the 0800 number where VF admit they stuffed up. Team promises to send corrected upgrade offer email.
  • Downers end up calling trying to book a time for a phone upgrade, had not been told about VTV. Downers say they will contact VF.
  • As of 13/04 still no confirmation email from VF about the agreed upgrade plan

Good to see VF haven't forgotten their roots during this change. Maybe we should have just ditched them.

@sansom can we get some help here? Still no correct upgrade confirmation email after verbal offer on 6/04 and multiple calls to the 0800 number.

My Grandfather was told to expect 15/16 April during a call last week and still nothing.

Not a great experience and he's now asking me about dropping VF completely.

I wonder if the reason they're still giving some people Wifi extenders is because the wifi (5ghz only) on Vodafone TV can be quite dodgy if used with the wrong 5ghz channel. Even on my Vodafone supplied Ultra Hub I had to manually change the channel (it didn't work reliably on auto)

Now that I've manually set a channel, The Vodafone TV gen2 in another room has been running really smooth

Now you mention it he may have had trouble connecting to the VTV box from the Ultrahub using wifi. I was focused on trying to get the ethernet cable working as well as checking ethernet connection to my PC and NAS from the Ultrahub.
