can someone on telstra do a tracert to youtube and post the results here. if telstra is rate limiting youtube, what's the point? are they overselling their bandwidth on consumer plans?

It is actually better to trace to cache.googlevideo.com as thats where the videos will be coming from most likely.

From a previous post there was:

I just tried to watch a YT video now (90s 360p) and it buffered 6 times and I gave up! This is the traceroute

I've emailed TelstraClear mid-week to tell them to update their Service Status page to show "Some Problems" on their Cable network with YouTube due to TelstraClear peering issues. This was passed on to the relevant people but as you can see, unsurprisingly, they still report "No known problems" on their Cable network.

So far the hosts file fix is still working and keeping speeds just above the playback speed - this shouldn't be required however, telstraclear should fix the issue.

Completely unusable at the moment, even switching to HTML5 and Chrome. It hasn't been too bad for me of late, but for the past week it has been it is simply not even worth trying.

Yes, it would. I'd be curious to see if your performance increases (it didn't much in my tests with a VPN to the the UK/France)

First rule of providing quota based internet is don't limit your clients! Why? More downloads equals more $$.
Second rule of providing quota based internet is make stuff fast! How? Cache, host CDN's and have loads of capacity!

These are basic common sense rules so why do you think TelstraClear is ratelimiting?

Looking at Youtube's performance on TelstraClear doubled mid Feb. Why? How and Who?
TelstraClear have not changed anything... So could Youtube have changed something?

The content providers are in the strong position and the clients on the internet are in the strongest.
e.g.
Me = Client
Geekzone = Content
ISP = TelstraClear

The client can go about using the internet looking at content like geekzone from there IP enabled device. The ISP just needs to shift the bits from A to B and provide some bits like DNS/routing/client authentication/transit to help glue it together. The content provider can differentiate between users and provide a VIP service and for the masses a free service like geekzone does. The content providers can as part of the differentiation rate limit/redirect client to servers hosted anywhere in the globe.

The ISP's job is to shift the packets the client requests based on the content providers "direction".

ISP's who have quota's want to do this quickly and as cost effectively as possible. Hence Rule 1 and 2.

My latest average has dipped down to 0.25Mbit/s according to the YouTube speed chart. That's 1/12th the global average. I started this thread almost 6 months ago, and not only has it not been fixed yet, it's now worse than ever. TelstraClear - best ISP ever.
