I know this is totally off topic but i dont really think it warrants another thread as it's just a question has anybodyelse had MTU issues with there Xnet Connection i noticed about 3 weeks ago i couldn't connect to any M$ websites inculding live.com,msn.com etc. and found it to be a MTU issue and in the end i had to lower my mtu to 1400 from 1490 in order to access these sites, Anybodyelse experienced anything like this?

Here's my artists impression of the problem:

I know xnet have prided themselves on being the ISP that doesn't shape or throttle traffic but it's just not practical to have unthrottled leechers whoring up bit torrent during peak time.  Traffic management is inevitable in all networks just face it..  General web & email, gaming, voip and streaming video should have better QoS than http downloads, ftp and bit torrent no question.

I'm not going to post anymore about this issue until the "fix" that xnet is working on has been implemented. This thread is now more than 20 pages, I think the point has been made.

It would be nice to have something from xnet as to when the fix is going to be put in place or even a rough timetable but there you go.

Just paid my first month bill for fusion. I've been very satisfied with the connection (Used orcon before).
I can also confirm the slowness at evening ever since last week. Hopefully they come up with a solution soon.

When I talked to maverick during our Geekzone Pizza here in Wellington I was told things are coming soon. Xnet doesn't want to "shape" anyone so it will offer a compelling reason to help level that traffic. It should be announced soon.

As you say, the point was made. So now just wait.

darkknigh152: Does anyone know when Xnet's new international bandwidth will be coming online because if it's not reasonably soon then I'm definitely changing ISP's.

There's somethng coming up soon, as posted in another discussion. If it involves more bandwidth I don't know but I can tell you that "more bandwidth" is not the panacea you want - simply because like in many other computing resources bandwidth is finite and tend to be used at maximum when available. This just makes commercial sense for both your provider and you.

No one wants to have an "unlimited" plan (even while paying for the traffic) and not use it to the maximum. The same goes for your provider. But as pictured before, there are "humps" of usage at certain times.

Throwing more bandwidth on those times won't help much because it will all be used, creating a need for more bandwidth - and thus creating a huge gap between what's needed and what's available in another hours of the day.

Yes, I suppose I have to agree with you there. It does make complete sense that adding more bandwidth won't alleviate the problem. I was a bit annoyed when I posted it because, as someone else put it, peak hours are generally when I want to use the internet for things like youtube and it was quite frustrating having to wait so long for a video to load.

Thanks for the little bit of illumination, Mauricio. I am afraid that the consumption of an attractive resource has to be controlled, somehow, either by some physical limit or by a pricing mechanism. Maybe the price per GB should be progressive. Maybe the 20th GB should be dearer than the first.

I look forward to Xnet's proposed solution. And I still think my sharpish email to them is warranted!

Are you sure it was actually a US server, not a local Akamai mirror?
