This is frustrating. Some videos I try to watch don't even load, the rest load so slowly it takes a good 10-15 minutes to buffer a 5 minute video. And that is at 360p.

According to that graph, in the last 30 days I went from 1.25Mbps to 2.0Mbps but over the last week it has seen a steady decline to 0.25Mbps.

That host file fix makes things significantly worse.

That would be Xtreme Networks. They are expensive...

Ouch.  Expensive is right, and only up to 2Mbps.  Free national traffic though.

I'm guessing they must be basically governed by what TelstraClear will wholesale to them at, and I bet it's designed that they will always be more expensive.

Shame, because if they were even close to what TelstraClear charge at similar speeds and had a YouTube that worked, I'd be switching.

Are you listening Xtreme Networks...

yuxek: would using a usa vpn to access youtube mean it will bypass telstra if they are rate limiting youtube?

yes this works, is how I resolved the youtube issues.

i just configured IE to use a proxy and used IE when I wanted to watch youtube.

not that I should have to be doing that.

Xtreme networks offer business grade services not residential grade shared network best effort residential services like consumer ISP's.  I doubt they are interested in the consumer market at all.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Has it improved? I was about to complain that it was the worst it's ever been but minutes later (coincidence) it no longer buffers every 5-15 seconds. Download speed is still under 100KB/s on average (which is good for watching without buffering but saving bandwidth...) and it's been like that for half a year with lows of 20KB/s MAX.

I had signed up to have a Telstra cable installed. I read this forum and some other article about the YouTube problem and was alarmed. So I sent Telstra the links asking for their comment. I said that if they could not promise that I would not notice a reduced performance watching YouTube and the Daily show I did not want to go ahead with the installation. They wrote back to me this morning that they are "working with google to resolve the problem" and I should let them know if I wanted to cancel the installation. So I cancelled - they did not try to talk me out of it at all.

This is giving me the indication that a resolution is not very close.

JonC:
Stix: Hi All,
Suggest we can log this fault/issue via the TCL online help section - contact TCL. Log a Highspeed internet fault. I have TCL web site link below. This avoids siiting in the lenghty help desk telephone queue...a case number is emailed back from memory. TCL should be able to monitor/log these complaints.
Cheers

Unfortunately, you'll probably get this stock answer back like I did:

Due to the complexity of diagnosing faults, we are unable to assist via email. Please contact our fault specialists on tollfree 0508 888 800. I do apologise that we are unable to assist you further on this occasion.

You get that response when your correspondence goes through the wrong queues. Luckily they're nice and convoluted so not a lot of sense can be made from the options you're given.
In any case - the message gets inserted by a sales or billing agent, then forwarded to the technical team. It get's there in the end. The slogan is "Now's Good", not "Now's Likely".

Remember when TelstraClear took 6 months+ to resolve a routing issue to popular Australian FPS gaming servers.

Routing was going from from NZ to AU via Hong Kong to any AU server using Pacnet/Asianetcom as a transit provider (iirc).

History has shown that TelstraClear seem to move at glacial speed when resolving routing/peering/performance "problems" for whatever reason (politics/commercial agreements/whatever).

Basically the ongoing length of the youtube problem is not suprising and seems to be what you can expect from TCL.

youtube my_speeds
Those are my results from youtube.com/my_speed with it varying in average speed per browser (more videos are watched when I have good speeds = better average over 24hrs).

The host file doesn't work, what are other methods? I used hotspot shield but it's annoying with all its adverts.

Also if you refresh youtube, all youtube videos now have Show Video Info on them with streaming statistics... Very very helpful.

Interesting both Telstraclear and Telecom have hopeless streaming media capabilities, with the smaller ISP fixing their streaming problems with cache products like Oversi and Peerapp, the other thing the smaller ISP's have in common is no ownership in fibre to NZ.
