Talked with my flatmates some more about VDSL. They're not keen on paying for it and would plan to keep the existing cable since it mostly works well during non-peak hours. If we went VDSL I'd be forking over all the money myself. :\
Guess I'm going to continue being stuck with the worst ISP I've ever had to deal with in my life. Fantastic.
Vodafone, just fix your crap already. This is beyond ridiculous.

Firstly, kudo's to VF reps who kept me updated via pm's that w40 work was in the pipeline from a week ago with updates through the week and right down to a day and time when confirmed today. Much appreciated. There was a small outage at 10.10am today and then I had a followup message advising that w40 had been done.
My monitoring at home confirms the above outage as well as shows that smokeping to the VF gateway became much more stable from the time work was done.
As you can see, prior to 10am, it was all over the show. The spike towards the right was probably me messing around and running back to back speedtests when I got home.
Speedtest done at 7.25pm:
I have not seen speeds this high at this time of the evening since the last round of work that was done. Now to see how thins pans out.
I can also confirm that I am receiving near 100Mbps tonight (Wainuiomata). Let's hope things stay this way - in the meantime I guess I should suspend my TDR complaint and get Vodafone to cancel the subsequent VDSL connection they were investigating for me. At least I have a paper trail of sorts with both Vodafone and TDR if the problem resurfaces, and I got one month service for free.
Thanks for keeping us updated MikeHales - it would be good if we could get more comprehensive upgrade progress updates like Nish has been getting if that's possible.
Well it looks like my connection has been running a lot better this past week so I am a bit more optimistic. I'm getting at least 40Mbs during the busy periods and 120-130 at off peak.
Due to all the issues I have been having and the fact that Chorus have been busy bees down my street I ran a check on the Chorus website and wouldn't you know it they have stopped the fibre rollout about 30 or so metres from my driveway....... but no fibre for my house until 2019 :(....
so please oh angel of cable broadband ( or Vodafone capacity planners) continue to deliver me multiple Mbps of download speed even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of school holidays... yours be the divine HD Netflix and Hulu Streams for ever and ever amen.

Overlooking the fact that your cable is free, how much is the price difference between VDSL and cable (if you were paying the proper rate for it)? Is it a massive difference?
Really pleased you're getting the speeds, great news.

With Vodafone, the difference in price would have been $5/month for VDSL vs. 50/2 Cable, or $15/month vs. 100/10 Cable, noting that VDSL speeds normally range from 25-45Mbps (in my experience) though gbwelly's getting an exceptional 65Mbps.
If you don't have a VDSL modem/router already then Vodafone actually has one of the cheaper rates when you include the free modem + installation on contract. Places like Bigpipe are a bit cheaper but have a small installation charge ($50 I think) and you have to provide your own modem, but there's no contract.
For what it's worth I've noticed over the last few weeks my service has slowly started to degrade.
I was lucky enough to be one of the first to have their node upgraded. For the last few months I have rock solid speeds of 100 down and 10 up even during peak times.
Now that additional nodes are being upgraded I'm noticing my peak speeds dropping. I've gone from rock solid 100 to an average of 30-40 down during peak times. My assumption is the congestion issues will return for everyone even after the nodes are upgraded as the capacity gets quickly consumed.
We'll be quickly back to where we started.
Fibre can't come soon enough.
Bound to happen unfortunately and it will be a vicious circle until a major revamp is done. We had a good run for about 2-3 months since the last upgrade before things turned to bad.

Does anyone know with the fibre infrastructure whether its possible for something like this to happen in the future as more people get onto fibre?
Hmmm.... my connection is now borked.... 937pm, getting 5 down and 2 up.
Guess the Kelburn/Karori upgrade has worked well :-/
It's never been this bad, even when others have been struggling like island bay and wainui.
