r2b2:

Does anyone know with the fibre infrastructure whether its possible for something like this to happen in the future as more people get onto fibre?

It can happen to any ISP that they fail to plan. The sizing of the splits in the UFB PON network is that fewer connections will share the same bandwidth at the street level, but anything between there and the ISP could choke up like has happened for some ISPs already. If they choose not to purchase the capacity that they need to provide what they are selling then yes, it could happen. The good thing is that you can change to one that doesnt suck with fiber, whereas on the cable network you do not have that option.

So now I guess the next question is, how is Cable going to perform with heaps of Docsis 3.1 modems hanging off 1 node?

Does a reboot of the cable modem achieve anything?

Overlooking the fact that your cable is free, how much is the price difference between VDSL and cable (if you were paying the proper rate for it)? Is it a massive difference?

With Vodafone, the difference in price would have been $5/month for VDSL vs. 50/2 Cable, or $15/month vs. 100/10 Cable, noting that VDSL speeds normally range from 25-45Mbps (in my experience) though gbwelly's getting an exceptional 65Mbps.

If you don't have a VDSL modem/router already then Vodafone actually has one of the cheaper rates when you include the free modem + installation on contract.  Places like Bigpipe are a bit cheaper but have a small installation charge ($50 I think) and you have to provide your own modem, but there's no contract.

I might be missing something, but (to me) paying an extra $5 a month doesn't seem like a huge amount to pay to get a working connection, that works all the time, not just in off-peak.

Oh I absolutely agree, I was in the process of having Vodafone switch me to VDSL until the Cable issues were resolved... and for now, it looks like they are in Wainuiomata.  If it degrades I'll be on the phone to Vodafone yet again, but I'll stick with Cable while performance holds.

As an extreme example of "no alternative":

My son (who is IT literate and follows this thread) has recently returned to New Zealand, and is renting a house in our street.

His house is connected to HFC cable by an underground conduit (unusual in our suburb).

This conduit lies underneath a long concrete drive, recently resurfaced.

There is no copper connection (the old POTS line was used as a pull-through for cable).

Fibre is not available for another 3 years.

There is a happy ending to this story.  smile

Believing that cable was his only option, my son signed up for Vodafone HFC cable 50/2 Mbps (with a 12-month contract).

The tech arrived at the appointed time, and connected the house to cable, which is now working well. Even the Technicolor modem is behaving itself.  smile

When he heard about the "missing" copper connection, the tech re-connected the house at the street end (up a utility pole on a cold, wet, windy Wellington Winter day) and at the house end.

Presumably a hybrid coax/copper cable had been pulled through earlier when cable was installed.

So my son now has a working cable connection AND the option of using a working copper connection. The only draw-back is the 12-month contract.

That tech deserves a medal.  smile

I though vodafone delivered their own copper network along side the coax internet service? If its connected to that can you even get dsl provisioned over it?

Correct.

No dsl where the hfc network is - why would you do that?

Only useful for classic pots lines these days....

I think the current capabilities of the HFC networks are a good case for DSL to be used ;)

So the missing copper that has been reinstated is still completely useless unless?

I'm on VF cable with a landline, and live in the same street as my son. (see my last post)

Until recently I had a back-up ADSL connection with Orcon, as well as VF cable. No problems except for the additional cost.

I don't think that Vodafone would have provided ADSL at a "cable" address, but I didn't ask them. wink

28ms should get you most of the way to Sydney, that's terrible for a Wellington server. As for 245ms... playing a little CS with SC maybe?
