Is there any value then in moving off my adsl to the cable in Karori area ? Had a sales guys here last week saying its 100meg download guaranteed and not impacted by "noisy neighbors "
Yes.
So will these mean even when its at it worst, as per graph's, 60% it will still be better than my 5meg downloads I get with ADSL ? I would really hate to kill the streaming we can currently do.
If you can only get ADSL1, then cable will outperform most of the time. A 50/2 plan will seem quick, a 100/10 will be rocketing.
I haven't worked for vodatelstraihugclearskywxcwhodidiforget for a few years now, but cable still rocks. A lot of people did have issues for far too long, and Voda took an outrageous length of time to address the issue - showing real contempt for their customers - trying to decide whether to dump cable and move everyone to UFB instead, but they have done most of the hard yards and the upgrades appear to have set them well for the next major upgrade.
I won't go into the differences between dsl's, NZ copper network, how cable is different etc. others more intelligent than me have analysed it to death on this website and their materials are still here. In principle I don't like the chorus network because it is able to precisely ration and apportion bandwidth exactly as your ISP has purchased the line. Down to the port you're connected to. They have to because they are so tightly regulated every cent counts.
Cable is nowhere near as draconianly managed.... Which means it rocks when the ISP invests and sucks when it doesn't. Exhibit A, voda 2015.
I work from home a lot - which means a LOT of video calling - as well as streaming multiple channels, and even at 330pm when kids come home it's good. I'm connected to Karori node WGC and it works fine for me, and I live in a house where Netflix/3now/others get hammered in the evening.
I was also on VDSL in Karori for a 6 months and had a 20/8 connection with big pipe. It struggled with 2 HD streams.
So yes... If you're still on adsl.... And can get cable... You'll see amazing performance.
I just moved house to a UFB zone but got VF cable setup in the meantime.
Started looking at pricing etc for UFB as I had a very bad year a few months back with node congestion.
I called VF's retention team to see what they could do to help me decide to stay or go....they certainly convinced me to stay on cable with a very very good offer well below UFB rates and they threw in a free month on top.
VF seems to want to retain customers, but isnt sure how to communicate this..lol...but if you are in a cable area and considering a switch, it could be well worth your while to call the VF retention team first.
