Is there any value then in moving off my adsl to the cable in Karori area ? Had a sales guys here last week saying its 100meg download guaranteed and not impacted by "noisy neighbors "

Yes.

So will these mean even when its at it worst, as per graph's, 60% it will still be better than my 5meg downloads I get with ADSL ? I would really hate to kill the streaming we can currently do.

If you can only get ADSL1, then cable will outperform most of the time. A 50/2 plan will seem quick, a 100/10 will be rocketing.

I haven't worked for vodatelstraihugclearskywxcwhodidiforget for a few years now, but cable still rocks. A lot of people did have issues for far too long, and Voda took an outrageous length of time to address the issue - showing real contempt for their customers - trying to decide whether to dump cable and move everyone to UFB instead, but they have done most of the hard yards and the upgrades appear to have set them well for the next major upgrade.

I won't go into the differences between dsl's, NZ copper network, how cable is different etc. others more intelligent than me have analysed it to death on this website and their materials are still here. In principle I don't like the chorus network because it is able to precisely ration and apportion bandwidth exactly as your ISP has purchased the line. Down to the port you're connected to. They have to because they are so tightly regulated every cent counts.

Cable is nowhere near as draconianly managed.... Which means it rocks when the ISP invests and sucks when it doesn't. Exhibit A, voda 2015.

I work from home a lot - which means a LOT of video calling - as well as streaming multiple channels, and even at 330pm when kids come home it's good. I'm connected to Karori node WGC and it works fine for me, and I live in a house where Netflix/3now/others get hammered in the evening.

I was also on VDSL in Karori for a 6 months and had a 20/8 connection with big pipe. It struggled with 2 HD streams.

So yes... If you're still on adsl.... And can get cable... You'll see amazing performance.

I just moved house to a UFB zone but got VF cable setup in the meantime.

Started looking at pricing etc for UFB as I had a very bad year a few months back with node congestion.

I called VF's retention team to see what they could do to help me decide to stay or go....they certainly convinced me to stay on cable with a very very good offer well below UFB rates and they threw in a free month on top.

VF seems to want to retain customers, but isnt sure how to communicate this..lol...but if you are in a cable area and considering a switch, it could be well worth your while to call the VF retention team first.

Personally I think if VF really wanted to retain customers, they'd offer Fibre in Cable areas. (Surely the cost of throwing in free months & discounted months must cost more than just paying Chorus whatever wholesale fees are required to provide fibre)

The problem is that if they install fiber to a house, people then have an easy change to another ISP, while there is only copper into the house, people are trapped on vodafones services. If they move to bigpipe/2degrees/someone else on fiber, then there is little reason to move back to vodafone. Best keep them stuck.

Conversely it makes it easier to switch back to Vodafone if Vodafone offered a good deal (e.g. threw in free Sky for 6 months or something crazy like that).

Presumably in a fibre world, there's no technician who has to come out to do things to get you setup - you signup to a new provider and Chorus do their changes at the exchange and you are away laughing.

Right now (I've just switched to Spark from Vodafone because I wanted Fibre installed) I'm even more unlikely to go back to Vodafone as I don't want the hassle of having to be at home for a large period of time on some random day that a technician will come and hook the cable and cable modems back up etc. It would have to be an insanely good deal for me to now go back.

I used to live in Paraparaumu and was on cable for the entire time but we had fibre installed in the street best part of 18 months ago. So there are areas with both cable and fibre.

Yeah but if vodafone admitted that cable is hopeless and said they would move you over to fiber, you would be able to just go to a better deal with a quick signup online and no tech coming out when your term was up. If you are on the cable and getting credits for it being hopeless then you cant just hop away to greener pastures with a few clicks on an application form.

He's the only one that seems to be making an effort so maybe dial it back a wee bit ;-)

And that's exactly the problem. He's the only one making any effort and his effort falls short.

I'm sure @MikeHales has to follow Vodafone's strict media policies.  Like I said he seems to be the only one making an effort recently so maybe we don't want to be too quick to shoot our only messenger.  Give him time to respond.

Mike only announced the Island Bay work after being prompted by people complaining about an outage but it was scheduled days earlier, he should have known and he should have mentioned it. People had being crying out for an update for months at that point.

@MikeHales If you feel my criticism is unfair, please say so. It's not my intention to make you feel unwelcome here, but as I mentioned earlier, we have over a year of meaningless non-updates and not being taken seriously in this thread, it really doesn't feel like that's changed much.

You aren't cable any more, are you? Sorry to sound rude, but why does it bother you now?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

@quickymart , you don't work for telstraclear anymore or have cable, yet you are a major contributor to the thread.

I am struggling with international download speeds and I posted this on the other thread as well.

I have been happy with VFNZ cable for years and yet now it looks like I will be forced to move to bigpipe/others as we have fibre available.

I don't want to leave VFNZ but seems I don't have a choice.

I have opened a case as well and yet no updates.

Hopefully, if there is someone from Vodafone here who can help would be great.

I don't feel it's unfair or scared off. I'm a big boy and I'm here representing Vodafone so I'm expecting some flak.

I'm sorry my updates may have fallen short but will try harder. I appreciate the honesty and the sharing of data.

Message me with some details and I'll get our network to have a look, sorry about that.

Looks like we're back to business as usual tonight. I wonder if those Windows 10 Anniversary Updates going out are killing Vodafone's network even more than usual.

Holy smokes :(

Hate to think what it would of been like if the nodes were yet to be upgraded, I'll test our connection when I get home from work later
