um it is actually working tonight. Loading really fast.
I am guessing this is just a glitch and won't get my hopes up.

It wasn't just TCL that was much better last night. I spend weekends in Martinborough, where I have Orcon DSL. YouTube, other streaming video? and also Skype webcam were all far better than usual last night. So don't give all the kudos to TCL?- I suspect the broader network was just going a lot better. Could the Southern Cross cable operators have freed things up in response to a competitive announcement during the week?

tunafish: Interesting both Telstraclear and Telecom have hopeless streaming media capabilities, with the smaller ISP fixing their streaming problems with cache products like Oversi and Peerapp, the other thing the smaller ISP's have in common is no ownership in fibre to NZ.

Wait, clarify "streaming media" if youtube is your only example of online media, then sure I agree as a customer of TelstraClear, but for other websites and streaming video I couldn't be any happier personally.

Added to that, I would have presumed Telecom should be fine for YouTube considering their google cache?

Correct,

Telstra is having problems with youtube because of the peering/routing issues to google/youtube cdn's.  All other streaming video sites seem to be fine.

Telecom (non big time plans) have no problem with any streaming video sites.  Big Time is fine for youtube (due to the cache in telecom's network) but struggles with other streaming video sites especially international sites in peak time, but really that's expected as the plan is unlimited and every big leecher in the country is on it.

That's a sweeping statement and I wonder how much personal experience you have of other broadband services. As as well as TCL cable, I have Vodafone and Orcon DSL connections and I can assure you they are not always fine. At times when TCL is awful, they can be just as bad. TCL is the worst of the three, but the others – at least the ones I use – are far from perfect. Let's have a bit of balance.

I didn't say anything about Orcon or Vodafone so not sure what you're getting at there. I have both a Telecom and Telstra connections.

What's an example of a video site that's "awful" on Telstra other than youtube?

Sorry - I interpreted your message as saying that YouTube performance on all ISPs other than TCL seemed to be fine. Now I see you're talking about video sites other than YouTube, all on TCL. My mistake totally. However, I would make the point that, with experience of three different broadband connections, I know that poor YouTube performance is not as confined to TCL as many contributors seem to think, and I wonder how many of them have been watching YouTube on other services. Buffering is where you find it...

No, it's not just on TelstraClear. However TelstraClear offers one of the best services in the country, and its cable network provides great quality. It's obvious to its users when there's a problem because it's in contrast to the experience we have with the rest of the their Internet service.

Hmm.. well, having just spent a remarkably short 13 minutes waiting to speak to TCL about a cable TV problem (poor signal, but that's for a different day..), I took the opportunity to raise this YouTube issue.

Gist that I was given is that the issue lies with the US provider Reach, and TCL are actively working on resolving the issue, which they volunteered was much of what this thread has been suggesting.

Upshot is, they're looking at getting caching installed NZ side. Oh, and <quote>"its affecting all our customers"</quote>...

Well, for fun I went and had a look at this video, after seeing it on the news tonight. It's Lady Gaga's latest, 9.5mins long.

Played it on full 1080p on our Vista machine, so a hefty streaming download.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQ95z6ywcBY

Reason I post up? did not buffer once, in fact the prestore was about 5 mins ahead of where the video was.

I'm on 10/2 cable, and played this at 930pm tonight - so peak period.

Add to that the video has been played 17.5m times, meaning it's high demand globally. Perhaps Google have placed it in the high power servers.

I may work for TCL, but I get nothing special - the above is a standard plan, standard service, standard everything.

GO figure.

And it proves she's not a bloke, which is always good (!)

Why can't TCL keep us informed about what they're doing (or not doing) about this YouTube issue. Six monthes, numerous complaints to their servicedesk and no decent updates. Just "we're working on it" for month after month.

Anyone from TCL who reads this forum should contact the TCL marketing department and remind them that this forum has had well over 20,000 views (and growing). Surely there is ONE person at TCL who thinks it's a good idea to keep large groups of frustrated customers informed? Or do TCL staff read this and do nothing?
