I don't see any of the iPhone plans that are to be bundled with 1GB data to be less than $49.95, or 3GB data to be less than $69.95, as these are the current pricing for data on Vodafone. If they were to price them any lower, customers will flock to the iPhone plans, and ultimately eroding their profit.

Unless of course, Vodafone reduces data prices all across...

It looks like it, They announced that they would be re pricing their Pre-Pay data.

I reckon that they will just allow you to add data as part of your "You Choose" plan, then it wont be so iPhone exclusive.

I'm picking about $30 for the first gig then $10 for every gig used after that... It would seem reasonable...

I use a Vodem as my ONLY internet connection, and I never seem to use more than 3 GB, so wouldn't expect to use more than 1 GB.

Maybe more for YouTube (Dreams of not paying attention in my year 12 English Class).

How about facts instead of conjecture eh?
I've been an iphone user in NZ for 6 months. I use between 200 and 500 megs of data every month. Here are some usage stats:

- I have WiFi at home, but not at work. I probably use GPRS data 10% of the time at home just because I forget to turn Wifi on.
- Two email accounts set to auto-check every 30 mins. Probably a total of 20-50 emails per day.
- I browse on GPRS maybe an hour or two per day (checking twitter from the car, google reader at lunch, etc).
- Google maps maybe a couple of times a week for finding stuff
- Weather a couple of times a week (dunno if it checks in the background)
- No major downloads or youtubing over GPRS

I can't see myself using much more data on 3G. The only thing that would get more use would be google maps (with the inbuilt GPS making it more useful).
Based on this, and my personal usage patterns, if I were to get a 3G iPhone I'd be looking for a 1Gig plan as a reasonable allowance.

If I had no wifi at home, I might worry about going over 1Gig.

And whoever said browsing the internet is annoying on the iPhone, let me just say that it is less optimal than using a desktop, but it is damn good for a phone. Blows symbian and winmo browser experience out of the water (I'm not talking about rendering capabilities or anything, just usability). Using google reader and twitter on the iPhone has completely changed my consumption of online media.

Ben, thanks for this run down of your usage. That was most useful and answers a few questions I had.

It's a bit difficult when switching from different phones to get a feel for how much different the data usage is. For me, I've been using Opera Mini for browsing and of course it talks to a special proxy server to resize graphics etc. that helps keep the data usage down. So, I had been wondering what sort of data plan would be useful for the iPhone.

Free Wi-Fi hotspots for iPhone and iPod touch: for three months after the iPhone 3G goes on sale, Tomizone is offering free Internet access through its network of Wi-Fi hotspots in Australia and New Zealand.

Tomizone is a network of privately owned hotspots which share access control and a billing back end – a pretty cool concept.

If you haven’t heard of Tomizone, it’s not exactly huge yet – but there are more accessible hotspots than you might think.

CheckTomizone’s hotspot locator to see if there’s one near you – or, probably more to the point, one that covers a café near you.

The free offer is limited to 500M of data per user and also extends to iPod touch owners.

However, for obvious reasons, I can't release any information. (I don't much like the idea of the 'boys in red' paying me a visit any time soon).

I was hoping that Telcos would take this opportunity to really revamp their pricing plans and encourage their users to take up the mobile web, but based on what I've seen from the announced plans in Australia, I can't see Vodafone releasing anything better.

I don't have any 'anonymous sources' to go by, but it's looking more and more likely that VFNZ are going to make us cry and then scream at their crappy plans. Anybody want to start a new thread yet: "Vodafone announces their crappy iPhone plans"
