Just watched the Cambell Live promo on the iPhone - nothing we didn't know already. And is Steve Simms the ONLY person in the country who's an iPhone 'expert'??

The VFNZ marketing manager was very smug about it all - enjoying all the hype. But at least he'll make sure all the poor suckers queueing in line will get food and drink! :)

jpollock: But, is the hype Vodafone generated, or is it all generated here? :)

Geekzone most be doing something right as Geekzone & a Geekzone reader was just mentioned on Campbell Live about the 3G iPhone.

I will link to the story once it’s up on the Campbell Live website

Interesting that.

I know of at least 2 people in New Zealand who are part of AppleSeed, and have been actively involved in testing the iPhone 2.0 firmware, and yes - that's on iPhone 2.0 hardware. I'm pretty darn sure both of them know a lot more than the aforementioned.  Of course there are very strict NDAs in place, and who'd risk losing toys like that just to blab?

I don't know why he'd be 'smug'. Any hype belongs to Apple and the iPhone fans. All VF have done here is annoy people who want an iPhone, and kill most of the fun.

We get a few meagre details just a couple of days before the device is supposed to be available. They're trickling out information in a most annoying way. 30 June: an email to tell us they aren't telling us anything. 7 July some people in the media get an email *hours* before the rest of us about the stores being open at midnight, and a promise of some *actual* details tomorrow.

It's more like they are trying to put people off buying an iPhone than that that they are engaging with or building on the hype.

I was contemplating joining the queue for a free feed. But the weather is going to be a bit manky.

If the iPhone 3G will be on sale at 00:01 here in NZ, does that mean that iTunes 7.7 and the iPod Touch 2.0 firmware will also be available at the same time? I believe that iTunes 7.7 will be required to to sync the iPhone 3G, but I'm not 100% sure.

What's the point in releasing the software at 00:01? Its not as if you will actually be 1st in the que, then get home and go and download the itune software straight away. Don't you have to sign up to a plan first? That takes more than 1 minute last time I signed up to Vodafone!
Just chill and wait untill all is revealed at a rather (random but) socially acceptable 10am tomorrow.
Its just a phone Cool

Unfortunately it's not about who is most qualified to comment, it's who's got the highest profile or knows the right people - that's why you'll often see people like Rod Drury and Steve Simms rolled out for comment.

Just checked on the NZ Apple store site, and it does say that iTunes 7.7 is needed for the iPhone 3G.

Requirements (PC)

  • USB 2.0 port
  • Windows XP Home or Professional (SP2), or Windows Vista
  • iTunes 7.7 or later
  • Internet connection (broadband recommended; fees may apply)
  • Wireless service

Very true.

There are those that like to talk about stuff, and those that like to do stuff ;-)

In all seriousness, those that do know an incredible amount about certain things aren't usually the best suited to disseminate information to a general audience.
