TelstraClear:
Behodar: The problem with the current HomePlan services (which I'm currently using) is that they're so slow! I'm very interested in UFB, but when will that happen? I'm supposed to be getting pricing from Orcon in the next couple of weeks but I'd prefer to stay with TelstraClear because I know what the service quality is like.

Hi Behodar. You may be interested in this statement that we gave to the media when they asked the same question about pricing recently:

"TelstraClear prefers to offer consumers a package of services that provide real value rather than simply announcing prices for basic services. For example, our current new customer offer of $75 for phone, broadband and 40Gb of data, plus two months free and a free wireless modem, provides people with a complete package at a market-leading price. TelstraClear will develop and offer packages that deliver great value to customers no matter how their services are delivered. As we have stated many times, it is the content that matters and not the delivery mechanism, whether copper, fibre or wireless. We are working on UFB packages that provide our customers with products and services that meet their content needs. These will be announced as soon as the fibre terms and conditions are clear. Our advice to customers considering fibre is to wait until there is choice in the market before making a decision, and to carefully check the specific terms and conditions, particularly around installation costs and equipment requirements. We are confident that our UFB packages will be extremely attractive and highly competitive."

As Allan Freeth has stated, we're looking forward to bringing the type of products and services that our cable customers already enjoy to New Zealanders no matter where they live.

If your home is due to be connected to fibre before we announce the fibre services, packages and prices, please contact me and we'll see what we can do for you.

Cheers, Gary

Just make sure those Homemedia boxes are running sweet before letting the rest of NZ try them :)

Would love to get this. But despite being located smack bang in the middle of Wellington CBD, in a 2 year old apartment building, I don't have cable available. In only NZ...

Except that it's not actually a 'cap'. It's the base amount you get as part of the package. If you use more, you pay for the extra usage.

@Telstra Clear

I upgraded via the call center earlier on and the lady didn't inform me of needing a new modem, how do I know if it will be sent out or not?

It has been noted that the 100Mbs only really helps you out on local sites or sites that are cached locally. Otherwise you are at the mercy of the international hops.

I currently pay $95.95 for 90GB and for this plan I would have to pay $115.95 for 100GB. That is an incresae of data of 10GB for $20.  For me anyway, I don't think the increase in cost for data is outweighed by the greater local speed.

Staying in Wellington. Check out my AirBnB in the Wellington CBD.  https://www.airbnb.co.nz/h/wellycbd  PM me and mention GZ to get a 15% discount and no AirBnB charges.

You mean my quote on Computerworld today?

You will need a new modem, which I assume is being delivered to you by a technician since they need to be installed and configured.

Also note that if you use a crappy router you will get crappy results. A lot of cheaper routers don't have enough processing power to route 100 Mbps of packets. There are high end ones (like the Cisco Linksys E3200 and E4200, the Cisco SRP 521W) and some NETGEAR (including the Wireless Extreme WNDRMAC) that will perform really well. Cheap routers will have limits and your experience will be most likely crippled.

Just upgraded to the 100Gb 100/10Mbps plan. A downgrade in the data cap but then again it is $20 cheaper.

All TCL needs to do now is sort out iSky!!

Interesting. Time to upgrade the E5200.

My ancient Airport Extreme handles gigE traffic at full speed, no problem. Only four ports though :-( They go to the cable modem (a waste), my server, my main desktop, and the old Linksys WRT54g 10/100 router (another waste).

Routing performance and Switching performance are not always comparable.

A good place to start for comparing routers is:

You will need a wee visit from a Man-in-a-van with a D3 DSAM meter to do some line testing and speedtesting as part of the install and he should bring you out a new Cisco wideband cable modem to replace the Motorola surfboard you have.
