I think you are correct, Sky TV is the elephant in the room which the media fails to focus on.

TCL source channels themselves, and have channels such as TLC that Sky don't carry.

At the end of the day it comes down to $ and a large customer base gives you $ to buy content.

Vodafone having a kick ass IPTV system and a product which they're willing to resell to other ISP's would be Sky's worst nightmare.

Yeah but honestly who cares about that? I'd say most of NZ would care about the sports channels, movie channels, Documentary, kids channels, and the entertainment channels. All hosted off sky.

So would Vodafone be able to seperately license those channels? I think not, so essentially you'd split the pay tv market. Eg. Nasa TV on Vodafone, Discovery on Sky...which way would you go?

How do other countries that have more than one player deal with this? Are customers forced to choose pay tv based on the channel lineup they want? Or do they all resell each others content like we have with TCL from Sky?

Hmmm not sure about this at present, Current proud unbundled customer of TCL, Ex customer twice of Vodafone, we stated then we would never return to vodafone. Will watch and see what happens.

Is that breeze I feel the axe finally being taken to all those legacy brands/websites/addresses still limping on at Telstra, I am looking at you paradise, clearnet and gawd knows what other dead wood....

TCl have around 200k broadband customers (and a few mobile ones), although simply looking at price per customer is waaaay oversimplifying the deal.

Sure, its a simplification, but VF are about to pay $4200 per current customer for TC. I'm sure the bulk of that is for TC's asset base, but, since assets of that nature tend to depreciate (rapidly), the customer is their main source of ongoing income. It will at least give TC customers an idea of what they might be worth to their service provider.

So word on the street now is that one of the first services to officially go will be the gaming services (assume that means on3 /steam/unmetered). If/when that happens I will most likely have to shift ISP or face massive data prices.

This is not a retail transaction thou, Vodafone grabbed Telstra for a couple of key reasons,

1) Backhaul fibre, Telstra have a impressive NZ backhaul network and this gives vodafone the opportunity to internalise a big chunk of external expenditure as contracts come up for renewal

2)It also allows them into the big corporate customers and allows them to bundle all sorts of services together, ie inter office data, + mobile + global

The next big thing to see will be if Vodafone is prepared to ensure that Pacific Fibre gets off the ground, VF have already signed on as a customer, but it would now be seriously in their strategic interest to fund Pacific Fibre as an investor to help them get free from SX (Telecom)

This was actually the lead article in the Listener a couple of weeks ago, and in the subsequent edition the feedback section included a very comprehensive rebuttal from Sky's CEO.

Actually this is a good point - maybe they will invest more in PF now, given that their international capacity requirements have just increased hugely.

I was with paradise.net.nz since 2000.
Had to change to TC after they phased out the Paradise brand.
Am I going to have to do this again? [username] @ Vodafone.co.nz ?

I've never used any Vodafone services. We have land line and broadband currently with TC. My girlfriend has a Telecom XT cellphone and a (recently purchased) Samsung galaxy tablet, I don't know which service provider the galaxy uses.

(BTW, this is my first post as a registered GZ user.)
