I thought that the new billing system Vodafones was implementing would fix this? I defintely never got the TOP up now text.
I would have thought that if a number had of been "used" then it would have a 3 month cooling off period not a 1 month period which seems to be the case.
Paul did say that he had asked the techs if there was a way of getting these numbers back. I would pay real money to get my number back as I had had it since Bell south days so it was very upsetting to be told thats IT!

I did loose credit when the number expired but thats not my issue I just wanted my number back.
Thanks for explaining that it cant be done however it does not make me feel any better.
I guess the CSR should never have got my hopes UP.
Cheers

johnr: Shin Vodafone is a business like many others out there!!

You are now just twisting things!!! Move on

Well, my initial question is still same

(1) is there any way to recycle simcard?

it looks not, so my question continues

(2) why it's not?

because it is fully automated system so no human interaction is possible

(3) is there any plan to fix the system?

I havn't got this answer yet

I can't see any twisting here, all i want to know is why vodafone does not recycle its simcard because its technically impossible or they just don't feel like it?

yes vodafone is just a business like any other businesses, so they should at least try to recycle things that they made like other "big" businesses at least try to show they are.

Shin dead SIMs 99% of the time are old SIMs

I would say they may not want old SIMs used on the network (but I could be wrong)

I can't answer for Vodafone I am NOT an offical spokes person I'm a employee that has a hobby of wireless devices that comes on Geekzone!!

johnr: and $35 for a SIM card with up to $15.00 credit is not overcharging!! Can you do it cheaper with all the packing and paying staff and rent, power!!

I think you know as well as I do that these prices are set by a process not dissimilar to throwing a dart at a board. That said, I happen to agree with you.

cranz: Once a mobile number has been put in to the recycle pool it will be allocated to a new sim card which will be sent out to a store. So I suppose you could say at this stage it is 'connected'. If the mobile number was removed and re-allocated to your sim then there will be a dead sim being sent to a store. Telecom will allocate a mobile number to an ESN (??) once a handset is purchased where as Vodafone has to allocate mobile numbers to sim's before they are sent out to be sold.

It doesn't matter. For what's worth Telecom will not reuse a number immediately after it's deactivated. There's a "cool down" period. This is the most user friendly way of doing it. Vodafone is only too eager to use the number.

Surely having a policy to wait a couple of months before reusing a number wouldn't hurt Vodafone?

In 2000, at least, there was a policy on this: Disconnected numbers would not be recycled for at least 90 days.

Paul if youre out there maybe you could suggest a 3 month cooling off period then that would enable more users to be able to "recycle" their SIM cards and not loose their number or their hard earned money (credit)

I am quite sure it still is for prepay numbers but once its deactivated due to non top up in 12 months it sits in the number recycling pool
