It was also hinted to me that some the banner advertising that they're going to run may also be MHEG5 based rather than in the broadcast stream.

Makes sense, they can then vary the advertising as they wish once the program is compiled... As long as they don't do multiple channels that could work out very well for HTPC users as they should be able to get the stream without the advertising.

Its surprisingly not actually that common. I was developed for the UK and adopted by a number of other countries but I think there may only be 5 or 6 that use it... Although the code is now open for people to use, it is quite hard from what I've read to develop both engines, client and server to actually get the code from the stream, build the application and then run it. As mentioned earlier, Myth TV has it but the MP team tried and didn't get as far as being able to integrate it due to the complexity.

Benoire,

Sommet's success will depend on advertising revenue so if users can by pass adverts then they will likely not be successful. Shouldn't people who want it to work watch the adverts and actually buy some of the advertisers products?

Indeed Jas, this will always be part of the problem with 'funky' streaming methods vs HTPC users. I for one have no real problems with Free To Air having adverts, but as I use an HTPC for my TV needs I won't be able to receive their advertising.

Benoire: Indeed Jas, this will always be part of the problem with 'funky' streaming methods vs HTPC users. I for one have no real problems with Free To Air having adverts, but as I use an HTPC for my TV needs I won't be able to receive their advertising.

You may not actually be able to view the product, so the advertising may be the least if your problems!

Unless they hide the stream completely and run a full interactive front end and make you select something before you can watch, then any stream can be found through normal dvb-t scanning.

Benoire: Ok, so it runs on the front end but it requires an active tuned channel running on the back end? Presume that if the flags where set correctly for PVR it would then record the selected data, or would it just grab all the data on that stream?

MHEG-5 PVR simply won't work on MythTV.

The PVR support requires call backs to be implemented so that the MHEG-5 code can tell the STB what to record and when. None of those call backs have been implemented in the frontend.

Red-Button style features to work in the UK but as no one is doing that so far locally I don't know how well it will work here.

Based on the capacity on the Kordia DTT multiplex I'd be very surprised to see Sommet transmit more than one a/v stream at a time.

That was my thinking. Ultimately there is going to be unencrypted core video stream. What's to stop an HTPC scanning and finding that stream. (Not that I understand how DVB works)

I don't believe anything can stop it from be found as it can't be encrypted without a decryption card unless they could hide a decryption key in the mheg5 application stream?
