Hmmm.. I seem to be suffering very similar issues. I have just recently (Monday) been upgraded to the Ultra Fast cable and had my old Motorola modem replaced with a new Cisco. Now I am finding some web sites (e.g. turbine.com, wikipedia.org) that will simply not load at all on any computer or device in the house. They load fine on mobile, and on the neighbours snap and vodafone dsl. The sites ping fine, resolve fine (using the .43 and .44 DNS with google as a backup) and traceroute gets all the way through - just no data loads. Other web sites will take between 20 and 40 seconds to load first time (including Vodafone ironically, IMDB, and parts of Geekzone).

Speedtests max out, connectivity to other sites are lovely and fast. I've bounced everything that is bouncable to no effect. I'm completely stumped. The worst part is, Lord of the Rings online no longer works (as it connects to the turbine servers) which means I am *this* close to being divorced by the wife and disowned by the kids. Help!

Any ideas?

Interesting. After reading this thread I installed Hola, set region to anything other than NZ and those sites load fine. Hola is useless as the solution though as it only works in Chrome so has no effect on game servers and mobile devices. Besides - I shouldn't have to use it.

I too have noticed some issues lately. For me it's sites like TradeMe and Kiwibank. Though in saying that the issues seem to have stopped for tonight.

Hi,

Hola is an in browser VPN solution. This is ADSL or Coax? (Excuse me if im not looking through every post)
Tried DNS servers. I have not had any luck replicating your issue.
The Pathping, nslookup and tracert's all look good. (Test to onshore sites and the one shaving the issues)

Thanks.

What I found happening is TradeMe would "load" (displaying a blank page) for about 15 seconds and at the last second the entire page would just "insta-load".

However it seems to be fine for me now. Not sure about the other guy though.

My issues are with coax cable. I'm not too worried about the odd slow load time on some site. What gets me is sites and servers returning NO data at all (like turbine and wikipedia - both sites used a lot by my family). I was just proving a point with Hola that those sites are actually up and can load for me locally via VPN. It's not a solution.

This exact same issue is happening to me tonight(in general there has been others too I have noticed over the past week or so). been trying to look at Wikipedia but just getting the exact same issue, nothing happens but when using a vpn solution it works fine, it seems like a transparent proxy issue that seems to be an on going issue with tcl/Vodafone, I was hoping Vodafone would iron these issues out and maybe they will given more time. But seriously looking at other isps and will really start looking when ufb becomes available in the next 9 months or so.

I echo insane's recommendation. These days most pages (especially Stuff!) display a wide variety of information (read Adverts) from a wide variety of websites. Therefore even if the ping times & routes look ok to the particular site in question, one of the other various servers that are serving up the rest of the info can cause issues.

Of course if your site is written correctly then this shouldn't be the case but quite often, unfortunately, it doesn't appear to be the case even with all the info out there on how to not run into the issue...

I used firebug for Stuff and nothing in the network tab showed up until after the 15-20 second delay when the site actually started loading.

Not to mention this is a new issue.

I've been experiencing problems like this for a week or more but only on some sites, notably http://stackoverflow.com/
Today's problem is that I can't get any response (not even delayed) from some sites (for example: http://en.wikipedia.com/ ).

The sites...resolve fine (using the .43 and .44 DNS with google as a backup)

I'd strongly suggest removing the google DNS servers and trying again.

Google DNS, CDNs and caching do not get along well.

CDNs such as Akamai use clever DNS tricks to point you to the CDN node closest to you; in practice this results in them pointing you towards the CDN node closest to your DNS server. The upshot of this is that if you're using google DNS all bets are off as to which CDN node you'll be pointed to - when I've tested this, it's tended to be Australian-based CDN nodes, but it varies a bit.

The issue with this is that the caches do their own DNS lookups when serving content (this is a measure to prevent cache poisoning), using internal DNS servers; if your DNS lookup resolved to an international host and the cache's lookup resolves to a domestic host, the cache will fail to serve the requested page (it's actually worse than that; the TCP session setup fails such that it times out rather than cleanly failing, so it takes an extended period of time to fail).

The solution is to use local DNS (we'd really prefer you to use Vodafone DNS, obviously), so that when you're served geo-localised DNS results, they're actually appropriate for you.
