johnr: Top is xDSL and bottom is a fibre

I would say you are not connected to either of those

He is connected to the top one.
I would suggest the backhaul has limited bandwidth allocation for that cabinet.

The top one is labeled CU BB

Yes the bottom little one is the fibre one that just went in to serve next door subdivision. Cabinets are located side by side though

I think you just need to site tight. Those cabinets look very new. I reckon you will see some movement in their relatively near future.

Chorus needs to tell the ISP that the cabinet has been upgraded. Then the ISP has to sort through all their customers and upgrade their profiles to ADSL2+/VDSL profiles.

And then after all that they need to replace your useless ADSL modem that has been ticking away for the last 10 years.

Also, use the search bar at the top and you will see you are heaps of others in your situation.

CU/BB was installed in 2001 so it's not that new at all ;)

2011 perhaps? 2001 it wouldn't have been a double bay whisper cabinet.

Cabinet history - As I know it

When we moved in Nov 2010 - there was an old much smaller cabinet there that was not (as far as we could find out NOT ADSL enabled) - I believe some gear was added(to existing cabinet) around dec 2010 to enable it - but right up to end of january both telecom and vodafone were insisting it was not ADSL capable - at which point we found a neighbour who worked something to do with telecom call center had had ADSL internet for approx 2 months. after a week or two of back and forth eventually they acknowledged it was now ADSL capable and we were connected Feb 21 2011(right before the earthquake) - ADSL speeds were perfectly fine at this stage

Cannot remember exactly when but sometime in 2012 the old cabinet was replaced with the cabinet in photo - there was no real improvement or reduction in internet speeds at this point in time.

Most the problems have started during 2013

No need for that I have 3 adsl2/ADSL2+ modems to chose from

The most recent only 2-3 months old

Very good point, I should possibly fix this spreadsheet now >.<

To the OP: You're getting faster than the Commerce Commissions regulated speed of 48kbit, so don't expect an upgrade anytime soon, you're in a DSL 5mbit area ;)

doubled checked with chorus for you. (another ISP's view)

CU/BB is indeed an ASAM, so ethernet backhaul options are no go. No plans to upgrade to an ISAM.

So what you getting is as good as its going to get :(

Simple fix would be to force Chorus to update it by borrowing a tractor and run the damn thing over in the middle of the night

No that would not force a upgrade as it would be replaced with what is there now

Bit late now, but I would guess this is the cabinet in question (from Google Maps)?

Which is not good enough in this day and age.
I wonder if the paper pushers at Chorus have any idea....

Who am I kidding....

EDIT:  Someone come up with a Tui sign for Chorus. Do want.

Also @ OP I feel your pain, was in a similar position. Worst time of my life, ended up moving to the city. Problem solved.
We definitely need more lines companies so consumers can vote with their wallets.
