Kodiack: Vodafone, please. :(

YouTube is just about unusable today. This thread's been pretty quiet, though, so how's it looking for everyone else? Or is everyone else off of their computer actually doing something productive today, unlike me? :P

I'm in Ngaio in Wellington and performance on cable lately is disgraceful i.e. 9Mbps and 90ms latency to the Speedtest Vodafone server in Wgtn on a 100/10 plan.

The sort of congestion causing 90ms latency to a server less than a couple of kms away just smacks of poor network capacity planning on Voda's part.
My problem is there are no plans for UFB in my street at all as far as I can see, so I am stuck with Voda cable if I want anything approaching good speed (which at the moment is a distant hope). To top it off I had a 130/10 plan but when the put me on unlimited they cocked up and dropped me back to 100/10 and as they no longer provide 130/10 I'm stuck.

Been like this since 7am on "100/10Mbps" cable in Island Bay, Wellington - unusable for Netflix ...

Hah ha, that comment made me giggle... I just have to trust that I'm still on the 130/10 plan...  I have no way of actually knowing if I'm on the 15, 50, 100, or 130 Mb/s plan anymore cool
They did take away my Motorola cable modem.. hmmm, I wonder if I could ask for it back?

Things are seriously bad tonight... I can barely get 1Mbps on anything off the Vodafone network right now.

I can start to sympathise with those on Conklin's

Really bad tonight.
ANZAC + bad weather + Netflix/YT = Youtube defaulting to 144p :(

Speedtest good, but real world performance bad. Using VF's DNS

Looks like total saturation of domestic transit inside NZ and total saturation of any transit inside AU beyond Sydney

On cable 100/10: speed tests via ethernet on VF Wellington server:

Below 10 Mbps since 7am, now down to 3 Mbps.
Netflix streaming has been impossible all day.

This has been the worst day yet for congestion.

sbiddle: I'm glad the industry completely ignored Stanners when he said UFB shouldn't be built because their HFC network was more than capable of providing the service.

While I agree FTTH/FFTP needed to be built and is a superior long term technology compared to cable...

The devil's advocate side is that from Vodafone/Telstraclear point of view why would they continue to invest anything in the cable network to maintain performance now with UFB being built to replace it.

Public investment has pushed out the private investment that would have taken place.

... Meanwhile some of us already on cable will have to wait until late 2019 for the UFB option.

Many parts of NZ will never get UFB (or cable) and will be stuck with xDSL and wireless.

EDIT:

PS  In Wellington cable performance has improved greatly since the recent horribly congested ANZAC weekend.

There's no way around it's a 10 year project, some areas have to be first and some last

Also the cost to reach everyone is simply too much, this graph below is for the Aussie NBN but it's probably the same for NZ

Hi,
I am on cable service in Hataitai and have experienced similar issues although not as bad.
My question is would this issue affect the t-box that runs off the same cable as we have been experiencing pixelation issues recently?

Things have definitely improved as of late. The last few days have been stellar overall, without any drops to sub-100 Mbps! At the time of this posting, it's just past 6 PM on a Friday evening, and the connection is going incredibly strong.

Hopefully we're in the clear! I'd be happy if this level of performance could be consistently sustained.
