I presume there is no hope of Vodafone increasing coverage of GPRS signals in the Rocky Bay area of Waiheke Island? Anyone from Vodafone want to comment?

@spacedog Nothing planned I am aware of but have you checked out the RBI page on the VodafoneNZ site for planned sites?

@johnr thanks...just looked.

The vodafone RBI tool maps shows our location with some coverage, but no increase or improvement to coverage even in the Final RBI stage. The reality is we currently have no coverage so even the map is not accurate.

@scheduler we have people at work who are on 2Degrees and they only get coverage in very limited areas and its really marginal, too

@johnr Yup, I get that.

Unfortunately we don't even get the coverage outside of the building. That's why even using passive repeater setups aren't working as the overall signal coverage only occasionally picks up 1 bar of coverage. We have to drive up the road to get about another 30m of elevation before we can get a more stable signal. :(

I have come across this before in a previous role when I moved the company form one ISP to another.
Ethernet is the way to go or as as coffee baron suggests if there is capability for an external antenna on the eftpos machine try that.

if you must us GPRS the only other way to improve signal is by a passive repeater. i.e. a high gain antenna outside pointing to cell tower and either a piece of leaky coax inside or another antenna inside like a car phone antenna. totally passive and may help, will cost a bit of money to do properly. you need good coax, good antennas and good connectors to make it work.

Well, I'm now looking into this idea of a passive repeater.

Does the 2G GPRS signal from Vodafone operate on 900MHZ or 1800MHZ?

Sorry to hijack the thread RE: passive repeater, does Vodafone have any policy on this? I would also be keen to setup a passive repeater at Hallam cove in French Pass for the residents of Cissy Bay. Who only have the Bulwer site in range.

@Apsattv I don't think a passive repeater is enough to cover an entire area. I think you are going to get improved coverage within a few meters of your passive repeater, only.

@Apsattv I don't think a passive repeater is enough to cover an entire area. I think you are going to get improved coverage within a few meters of your passive repeater, only.

Not trying to cover huge area, just taking the 5 bar signal at the top of the hill and dropping it to a dead spot under the hill to serve all the houses on that side of the bay and take them from 0/1 bars to something where they can use them reliably and a lot of them want it so they can get broadband to replace their dialup or overpriced satellite connections.
