JaniceL:  Hi,

Can you confirm if you are still having issues on the cse.google.co.nz and the other akamai content cdn.resignationmedia.com using the Vodafone Cable DNS?
Is platform.twitter the only remaining site stalling for your case?

Cheers

I can't confirm either way because I haven't "tested" extensively, but I haven't seen cse.google.* stall in the few instance that I've accessed Geekzone or Stuff (which is where I usually see them stall).  Can't say I've seen CDN issues either but honestly I've done very little browsing the last few days.

Had some more stalling issues today. It took about 60 seconds to load up speedtest.net and stuff.co.nz

I only managed to trace speedtest.net, by the time that had finished things were back to normal.

Remember, your tracing to speedtest.net not the testing server itself.

What server are you trying to target for a trace?

Interesting. I did a traceroute to speedtest.net and got vastly different results:

It seems like different results get returned based on whether the domain is prefixed with www. That seems to happen on large sites that would employ CDNs (e.g. Google, Facebook, SpeedTest, etc).

Oddly, pinging www.facebook.com has a ~40 ms latency. Conversely, pinging facebook.com returns near-200 ms latency. Google shows the opposite, where pinging google.com has a sub-10 ms average latency, while pinging www.google.com sits at twice that, with 20 ms latency.

Very strange.

The domains mostly seem to resolve to the same IP addresses with both Google and Vodafone DNS, though.

What's up with lo0.internet.ivpn.pe15.telstraclear.net, by the way? My latency to that fluctuates wildly. I've been told that it could indicate internal issues with my network, so I ran it across a couple of sites that I found on Google and got similarly inconsistent response times.

My inconsistent latency is immediately noticeable in the traceroutes above. WebSitePulse (the first site I found on Google) shows these results:

rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 46.671/273.597/488.442/154.954 ms

When looking at the New Zealand results, Super-Ping (another site I found through Google) has a minimum latency of 25 ms; a maximum latency of 110.6 ms; an average latency of 53.6 ms; and a deviation of 40.3 ms.

Granted, simple pings only tell so much of the story, but something seems very off here, especially when you look at how consistent the latency is to virtually every other hop along the route.

Ping is often not suitable for diagnosing apparent latency issues/variation. If you don't understand why my statement is true, then please just accept that at face value.

(If you already knew it, then you wouldn't bother posting funny ping results).

Along with pings, I'd think HAR files would be a good thing to collect as well but not sure if there is anyway to really get these to Vodafone? (Not that I've had the issue so far)

Is there anything you could share instead, please? I dislike "taking things at face value", especially if it's against something that I've said. If I'm wrong, I want to learn why I'm wrong so that I don't spread misinformation or misdiagnose issues in the future.

At a very simple level, not all elements on the Internet (routers/servers) respond to ping (ICMP) packets in the same way as they respond to other traffic. Some are rate limited, some don't respond at all and others may be behind load balancers which confuse things even further.

Whatever the scenario, unless you know about the config on the element you're pinging, unless it shows a very clear pattern (extremely consistent times), you can't be sure if the variability is due to congestion, deliberate configuration, a misconfiguration, a fault or some other reason.

Many, MANY examples I see posted on here held up as "Look at this, something MUST be wrong" are just expected behaviour.

Cheers - N

(Edit: Why didn't I say this first time? Because basically no-one listens, and the same questions will be asked tomorrow and the day after... It's tiring explaining and re-explaining things that aren't intuitive and no-one wants to understand)

Fair enough. I understand that times can be different and that such behaviour doesn't necessarily indicate an issue.

I didn't mean for my posts to say "Hey, here's an issue!" - I hope that they didn't come off that way either. I just found it rather peculiar that there was such a wide spread in latency for that first external hop. I don't often see that, so I figured that it may have potentially been something worth pointing out. At best, it may have indeed been a useful trend to note. At worst, nothing would come of it.

Troubleshooting is a fun little game, and admittedly I'm not perfect at it. I do a lot of technical support in my spare time, though, and I'm always happier to see someone share too much information than too little. Even if the information may not even be entirely relevant, it's still a learning experience for both sides. :)

Thanks for replying! I much prefer having some extra info to work with.

Latest chrome. Sorry, but I don't have much knowledge on this topic, I just supplied what others were supplying when they have issues. All I know is that sometimes, the same few sites just load halfway then sit there for minutes before completing the load, it just all of a sudden finishes loading instantly. Stuff, Geekzone, and Speedtest.net seem to be the most effected for me.

Stuff geekzone speedtest and xda for me. I know I haven't provided the requested logs (a second time). I'm out of time and energy to devote to this and just visit those sites on my mobile data where they work fine (like they did on spark, snap and Orcon before this). Been a problem since I signed up with vodafone, a problem for multiple users by the sound of it.

Moving from current property in a month and will only follow up if I can't get fibre or vdsl when we find a new place.
