For giggles I recorded and split out the switch over on TV2 from Nic to the normal TV2.

Download can be found here on rapidshare: http://rapidshare.com/files/93016709/TV2-15_02_2008-08_21-The_Go_Show.zip.html

Hopefully the actuall upgrade will happen some time soon....

Sorry if this seems ignorant, but why is it that the picture cuts out every time it is switched to 720px wide?

Because TCL have two systems for delivering their digital TV (from my understanding, not that I am a TCL staffer, this is just what I have figured out and seen for myself many years ago).
1) The old system.  This is a bank of Sky satellite Decoders hooked up via a Composite connections to a bank of cable encoders to deliver the current sky conent via cable.  The PQ gets degraded due to going from digital to composite and back to digital.  Also they re-encode in a different picture size, off sky / freeview it's 720x576, on the TCL cable it's 704x576 on the old system.
2) The new system.  This is a single translator box that takes incoming Sky Satellite feeds, decrypts them digitally but does not decode the MPEG2 streams, then re-encrypts them on the cable.  This way there is no loss of picture quality as the MPEG2 stream stays digitally encoded.  All that happens is the NDS Encrypted Sky satellite stream is decrypted, then re-encrypted into Irdeto on the cable.  So the picture always stays 720x576.

The old system is running most of the channels, however the "new" sky channels such as C&I and Vibe are on the new system, plus TV3 has been upgraded as well (not sure if this is using a direct feed off TV3, or off the Sky TV3 feed, or the freeview one, havn't checked the adds yet to be sure).

What TCL keep on doing is trying to swap from the old system to the new system however the components of the new system seem to be dodgy.  So we wait.

Does that help to clarify what (from my understanding) is going on.

Oh, I knew most of that from reading around here, but faulty components, eh? Hmm. I was starting to think the STBs couldn't handle the increased resolution/bitrate Tongue out

Aren't Sky's channels some bizarre resolution too? Like 350x576 or something?

And the most minimun bitrate that they can get away with compared to Foxtel in Ozz..

Would be nice if World TV were improved - PQ is really lousy. Rather than adding new channels to it

Looks like they are testing again this morning, it's back on 720x576 on TV1/2/UKTV.

I am however surprised that channels like Prime/Playhouse Disney are not getting upgraded. Prime is 544x576 on TCL whereas off Sky Satellite it's 720x576. and Playhouse is 544x576 off Sky, whereas it's 480x576 off TCL.

Yes it is still 720 X 576 for TV1, TV2 and UKTV so it looks as though these channels have been done.

I will check the E!/Living/Box vs what is on Sky sometime this week (don't have a sky card here), and report back. But so far TV1&2/UKTV look a Lot better.
