Hey, it just fell back to 3G again at this very moment. If any of you Vodafone people are viewing this, right now I am on 3G. I don't know why this happened. It seemed to be working fine until I posted my previous reply.

OK I just rebooted the router and it is back to 4G. This is starting to look like a problem with the Huawei. Don't know if it is related to the other issues.

It would seem you live outside the coverage area for RBI from the address you gave me. That would explain alot

Point taken. I have just been very frustrated and have been trying anything I could to fix this. I have found my ISP pleasant to deal with and I like the small scale of it but if these problems continue I will look elsewhere. I think I have pursued this as far as I can.

OK, thanks for that grant_k. As always, the problem is made worse if you don't know what to ask for. I will definitely look into this.

Given the intermittent nature, can you get a replacement modem? Use that straight away if they can allow you a few weeks to see how it goes. It would be a pity to go through the hassle of changing providers and be no better off.
Also, have you noticed any correlation to the weather?

I have discussed getting a replacement with my ISP and they have agreed in principle, but it hasn't happened yet. I intend to push it again next week and also see if I can get the upgraded firmware. I have looked for a connection to the weather, but have not identified anything.

kornflake: When you say the modem connects to a tower at a much greater distance than usual, are these towers at different poles to each other or are they say within a 25 degree radius, I may be wrong but honestly think there is a fault with the tower you normally connect off, only Vodafone can assist on this and only if your provider ask them the right questions to clearly ID the fault.
There seem to be three towers it jumps between when not locked on the correct one. They are all in the same direction, but the wrong ones are about twice as far away as the correct one.

Those figures are really bad and there is probably nothing you can do to make them better yourself that you haven't already tried. The RSSI is ok for 3G but the RSCP is awful and reflects the issues you are having. Definitely a job for your ISP but a modem swap would be worthwhile to compare results.
