I think we have already had a request to avoid this kind of questions. I am not comparing technologies - and certainly the technology doesn't come into play when we talk about the coverage offered by each operator.

Johnr, please come back to reality. I can spend a weekend in the Wairarapa and use CDMA EVDO Rev A, while Vodafone barely provides a bad GPRS service there. And the same in Napier where we spend a week and CDMA EVDO Rev A was rock solid and GPRS was the only thing available.Talking about is just fair to say Telecom's network is much better than Vodafone.

Its not really the best comparison, I mean in Hamilton I get better Vodafone Coverage over my Telecom Phone and the same applies when i travel to Huntly. There are certain parts where Vodafone is better and there are certain parts where Telecom is better, however it is true that TCNZ has more coverage of NZ than Vodafone NZ. Greater TCNZ coverage would never make me change from VF to TCNZ. Way better range of handsets in VF compared to TC + Better Txting deals and the Family pack deals for $20 are certainly very attractive.

Do whatever you want to do man.

Telecom has a wider 3G footprint than Vodafone. Vodafone may have GPRS everywhere they have coverage, but Telecom offers 3G everywhere they have their service. This is a big difference.

If your primary motivator is data services, then this is true. For me, the primary motivator is making and receiving calls. I find the CDMA network quality to be remarkably poor compared to VFNZ GSM - constant echo and noise. A CDMA-CDMA call was often painful to be on, especially if one person was in a noisy environment (crowd, car, server room). Add to that other issues with CDMA (no plus-prefix dialling; cross-network SMS problems; etc), the winner for voice services is definitely Vodafone.

Coverage for both has pros and cons. As a long time VFNZ subscriber (10 years this year) I've been generally OK with it, and I'm rarely out of UMTS2100 coverage. TNZ has some random dead spots that have caused me grief over the years; but so has VFNZ.

NB: The half-rate voice quality on VFNZ GSM is starting to change my opinion of the voice quality - but I think it's still better than CDMA; and I use both VFNZ GSM and TNZ CDMA pretty extensively (and have done for some years).

I would like to ask Vodafone employees to not post direct comparisons - simply not right. And I know who you are, which makes me even more certain of why I moved out.

I personally have almost always found CDMA calls to be of better quality. They sound much more natural where as GSM/UMTS seems alot tinnier. CDMA also seems to pentrate buildings alot better.

The lift at work kills my Voda signal entirely, whereas it seems to have little or no effect to the CDMA.

If I put handsets aside, deal wise I'd find telecom (prepay) for me personally to have the best deal, like $10 for 500 texts and the $10 is gradually used up instead of taken instantly, the per min rate for calling is better than paying 89c a min, also the special offer of $1 for 30 mins is good value also (pitty its not perm). Coverage wise in the waikato i've found telecom is better than vodafone, for example between Hamilton and morrinsville there is a very weak patch of coverage lasting around 15 kms from just outside of hamilton where as telecom is full strength.
I'm hanging out for the new wcdma/gsm network Telecom is building before I consider upgrading phones with Telecom, there are some nice new handsets coming out that will support both vodafone's new 900mhz 3g network and telecoms gsm850 network so just a matter of swapping sim cards instead of having to own 2 phones like a lot of people do (going back to when vodafone did free text weekends)

Interesting, I didn't know the + prefix issue had been fixed. None of the devices I've used (admittedly, I don't have any CDMA smart devices) have supported it, which was incredibly frustrating, especially when travelling.

It won't make a difference when roaming on a CDMA network, as other CDMA networks do not support + code dialling. You can however use easy roam to assist with this transformation.

I think a few of Mauricio's postings of late should give more than ample insight as to why he's left VFNZ. However, it does sound like something more (probably related) has really tipped him over the edge...

I'm seriously considering moving as well now - my account was supposed to have been suspended while I'm in a country where there's no coverage. Looking online, this doesn't seem to have happened.

Anyway, when Mauricio's ready (calmed down?), I'm sure he'll provide the final insight. Be patient...

Yep - one of the beauties of the SIM card, and very, very easy. SIM presupply is a good strategy!

It took precisely 3 days to get a SIM for my mobile. My blackberry 8830 came with a SIM to.

I have always found Telecoms network to be superior to Vodafone; the reality is Telecom offers superior quality of service overall. With that being said I cannot afford to be on the Telecom network when they cant provide deals like bestmate or the similar Family deal..

Maybe one day when i have more money to spend I will make my way back to Telecom!!
