They've already said they won't be locked. No NZ mobile carriers lock their phones.

I have spotted a way to get a 16GB 3GS out-of-contract for $1049 from that page. Price on $40 plan is $699. Early termination fee 0-6 months is $350. 699 + 350 = 1049. If they refuse to sell one to you outright at $1179, simply throw that ball in their court.

On that logic you could get a 32GB 3GS for $899 + $350 = $1249

Is it just me, or does it ACTUALLY say a 8gb 3G is the SAME PRICE as a 16gb one, yet the 8 has sold out first???

Same money for less storage - YES PLEASE???

Unless I am missing something...

That actually works out cheaper than outright for both the 16GB & 32GB on the $40 plan.
Maybe everyone should do that and they might get the picture that thier plans suck?

they need to update the table; for iphone 3G outright its 979, but in that table it says 1129.

All iPhone users get 3GB of data and 1,000 PXTs/month for the next three months with Vodafone NZ.

You have to upgrade to 3.0 software to get it.
All new 3GS users get it as do existing 3G users.

New customers get it from the outset - existing customers get it from their roll over date.

Hi Paul,

Are you able to comment on the reason why you cannot purchase a 3GS outright at launch from a VF store? Even if you are an existing customer on plan?

Why would VF do this if customers are able to purchase outright from Magnum Mac?

Believe that is for people who are within the last 12 months of an existing contract. They can pay $150 to cancel the rest of the contract on the condition that they are signing into a new one rather than just buggering off elsewhere

No need to go that far. You can go to Magnum Mac instead if you really want one on Friday.

Paul answered my question about the decision to limit outright purchase on the VF website. Basically it is because too many people were purchasing unlocked iPhones from VF and shipping them off to other markets. They don't like that and it is fair reasoning.

Although they could somehow give a concession to people who are existing customers purchasing only one iPhone to replace their existing handset - exactly the situation I'm in.

Too many iPhones being bought in NZ and then shipped offshore. Vodafone doesn't lock the iPhone - that makes us vulnerable to such antics.

We don't want to do it, I can't speak for Apple but I'm pretty sure they don't want that happening either.

This way we can make sure it doesn't happen.
