BTW - just to throw a spanner...

CDMA supports 240 character SMS. It is restricted in NZ to 160 character to be compatible with Voda.

Ahh...yes they did offer text messages, i can tell you this because i was one of there customers.

BTW Grantis, nice sig....totally agree with you there.

Disenchanted: I think a lot of the batteries 10 years ago had sheer size on their side - look at a 5110/5120/61xx etc compared to a modern 6220/6225 etc. The batteries were four to five times the size, but only lasting twice as long, that makes them half as good doesnt it?

The size has become smaller due to the switch to 3.6v cells and Lithium Ion batteries but the actual capacity of the batteries has increased as well. Looking at one of my old Nokias here with a 850 mAh battery I used to get close to 5 or 6 days without a charge. Most new phones will have around the same capacity but you'll get around 2 days use. Colour screens and 3G just suck the juice - it surprises me that instead of making phones smaller and smaller that they don't make them just slightly bigger to allow for higher capacity batteries.

Good point about battery life, but these days who wants a brick for a phone - it's all about how many features you can shove in a small handset.

Older phones like Nokia 6210 could fit a large battery on the back, but most new phones are restricted on size because the battery doesn't just sit on the back of the handset, they fit inside with a cover over the back.

I still think texting was easiest on the old 51xx series Nokias.

Its odd to see prices going up on telecommunications services. I would expect them to merely exclude the services from future price drops or bundled promos.

I have a Nokia 6100 & txting could not be easier IMHO.

As for the "talk time" battery life of 3G phones, this seems to range from 130mins - 190mins (according to the manufacturer), of which the Nokia's are "so far" superior. Naturally, 2.5G of phones provides considerably more "talk time".

PS - Damn, I knew I should of trade marked my signature and included any variation thereof lol :-)

Did you have your phone on "Standby" or were you frequently using it for voice & txt?

SMS from CDMA is NZ network supported to 200 Chars including MDN number and "callback" number, Voda can handle them alright, they just get truncated to 160 Characters.

If you make your "call back" number on some phones a little too long, it won't send.
I have a kyocera (2135) which can send 180 Character SMS's to other 027's, sending it to an 025 jams the persons Text capability and they have to get it removed and re-added. Whoops.

027's SMS is pretty unreliable too, delays a plenty.

Looks like voda sorted my issues out, finally someone who listened.
One account was Free everythng for 2 months before I chopped it., shame I didn't realize.
the other was getting overcharged on all gprs usage..

I was told today, so much of their traffic was international SMS from overseas tourists who use the SIMcard and then ditch 2 weeks later creating chhurn anyway & they'd recover some costs as a lot of countries interconnections actually cost more then 20c......

I actually contacted Vodafone today about some of the issues you were guys were having & asked the customer service rep to email the Vodafone billing department about some of the issues you guys were having with GPRS overcharging. They emailed me as well to confirm what they had written.

I actually contacted Vodafone today about some of the issues you were guys were having & asked the customer service rep to email the Vodafone billing department about some of the issues you guys were having with GPRS overcharging. They emailed me as well to confirm what they had written.

I hope mine is too. Although they won't be able to contact me unless they are on the ball and realize that the contact email is there for a reason ;)

In saying that, I have had no written emails or letters from Vodafone in regard to this with one exception. That exception has been an email from email support while it wasn't rude, it was not actually what you'd call informative as all of it was contradicted by Solution support before and afterwards.

All contact has been either via Customer Services, Solution Support or Tier 2 support over the phone.

What an absolute load of rubbish. We are being totally ripped off by this Telecom and Vodafone duopoly.

3G phones have 130 - 190min 3G talk time, you say? I recently bought a Siemens SXG75 which has 3G talk time of 300 - 360min.

What's very scary is I still have mine!! I really liked that phone. it started the "softkeys" and the "large display" and the famous EasyToUseMenu that made Nokia famous, I also have a TDMA varient of the same phone.
