MattEast:

Actually CDMA/XT has a different coverage foot print than Vodafone 900MHZ UMTS (only 3G available in Timaru) so it is very difficult to compare. The 595u had ok coverage with telecom, better than smaller USB models but not up to a phone from my experience.

That's actaully incorrect, there is and has been for quite sometime good 2100MHz 3G in Timaru, ask anyone down there who uses an iPhone 3G/3GS....they don't work on 900MHz but still connect to the 3G network down there.

Cheers
Matt

Correct this is also reflected on the Vodafone NZ coverage MAP

Correction noted, 2100mhz wouldn't help your 3G situation of course, the femtocell will.

But that statement re footprints is accurate, especially 2100mhz.

How would I stop other people using my sure signal femoto-cell without my permission? If a friend I have just met comes into my house with his 3g cellphone, will he be able to use my femoto-cell without entering a password? And does the signal reach outdoors because if it does could my neighbours use it without my permission?

Well My local Vodafone store reckons none of Timaru has ability to connect to Naked Broadband.

I called the Vodafone 0800 and was told where I live, in the city, 50 metres from the main road (state highway 1), is not on a vodafone exchange that offers naked BB. Niether is the CBD, South Side, North Side, East side or West side when I gave random addresses 3km apart. So I guess the store was right? No Naked BB for all of Timaru?

According to the Vodafone site, naked is only available in the Red Zone:

"Your address is not in the Red Zone

This means:
You'll pay the Outside the Red Zone monthly pricing for your services
You can get our home phone & broadband packs
What is the Red zone?
Naked Broadband is not available in your area"

Obviously this conflicts with what John said above...

If you are connected to a rural exchange or cabinet you can't have Naked DSL

(its not Vodafone that decides which exchanges are considered rural)

Vodafone NZ has plenty of customers across NZ on Naked DSL that are not attached to the red network

Any particular reason Vodafone don't allow Rural exchange customers onto naked?

Because the price is not regulated via kiwishare and commerce commision saying they wholesale it at retail less, like it is for telecom/chorus selling the PSTN service on a line, so they get to charge more for areas they decide are rural, and that puts the price up to where it is not competitive to have naked DSL as PSTN and wholesale DSL would be cheaper or about the same. Remember that PSTN and tolls are a massive earner for telcos as well.

If telecom/chorus get released from kiwishare hell as part of separation, it should be come competitive if they are then allowed to charge the true cost of providing service to rural customers, or else vampire the cost of it from urban customers as they currently do for analog PSTN. I for one hope for the first option since I am not rural and don't like the thought of propping those areas up.

There is nothing to stop this.

Most femtocell deployments (such as Vodafone UK) have been locked down deployments where you have to register the IMEI of phones before they can connect to the femto. This has attracted a lot of criticism and seen as one of the biggest failings from the initiail rollout so Vodafone NZ have obviously decided to skip this and go straight to an open model.

There is a list of rural and non-rural exchanges floating around on one of the government websites somewhere. It makes interesting reading. I really can't see how they came up with the list....

My views (except when I am looking out their windows) are not those of my employer.

Easy Tiger we're a small country and all contribute to the greater good. You city fellas already charge us more for petrol but we ain't yet charging you more for your fresh veg , dairy products or electricity.

Maybe we should either start another thread for Naked DSL or just stick to the OP topic.

Have a good weekend all.

I agree, I've created a spin-off topic to cover the Rural Broadband Exchanges etc. http://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=49&topicid=75691
