Exactly, apples and oranges. 2deg has 3 main cities with 206k users. Vodafone covers 97% of NZ's population and has 2.4million users, I'm sure the numbers would stack up better if you were to only factor in Vodafone's towers and clients in the cities 2deg covers

Most problems are the result of previous solutions...

It's also worth noting that the number of cellsites in this article is also vastly inflated, which is going to skew things even more.

khull: can't wait to sign up for my 4g plan with 100mb monthly limit. ahem - I think not.

having returned overseas from a 3rd world country, I could get unlimited 3G internet for only about $6 a week. I think I'll just hold out for just a bit longer - walk down the street in NZ and most people will have problems articulating what the true definition of 4g is.

What Country?
What Network?

Provided ' unlimited ' internet for $6 a week

Lets see how limited unlimited is

Wind mobile in Canada.

John have a look here. Unlimited for $CAD25 per month. Open term plus free USB modem.

Optus don't offer unlimited data. They offer unlimited browsing. Two totally different things.

3 unlimited data tariff challenges market
By Andrew Parker

Published: December 15 2010 22:44 | Last updated: December 15 2010 22:44

3, the UK’s smallest mobile network operator, is seeking to shake up the market and poach customers from rivals with “all-you-can-eat” smartphone data deals.

3 announced on Wednesday that, in stark contrast with its larger rivals, it would give customers the ability to do as much web surfing as they like on their smartphones for a fixed monthly fee.

It's good of you to bring at the 3 plan. It too offers virtually unlimited on-net calling (5000 minutes per month) which once again shows that NZ is far from unique offering on-net only deals.

It also includes 2000 off net minutes so 3 customers do not have to carry two phones when talking off net.

That's not my point however. You seem to continually raise the issue of on-net deals being anti competitive. My point is that they are now commonplace around the world. Even the OECD telco analyst who visited NZ last year to speak commented he was surprised NZers even had to pay for on-net calls.

3's plan is also more proof that retail pricing of mobile services has absolutely no relationship to wholesale MTR costs. UK MTRs are still 4.7p per minute, 2000 minutes off net at 4.7p is significicantly more than the plan cost.

As you know OFCOM the UK regulator is due to make a decision this month on further reducing mobile termination rates. The recommendation of the EU is that these rates should drop to half penny by 2012 so this pricing will change.

Ofcom’s Final Decision: What’s going to happen in 2011?
by Kim Craine ~ December 20th, 2010. Filed under: Terminate The Rate.

As we are rapidly approaching the end of the year, I wanted to update you on the timings around Ofcom’s final decision, currently expected in February 2011. Since the consultation closed in June this year, things have been quieter for the campaign as Ofcom has been away considering all the evidence it received during the consultation in order to make a judgment as to whether or not it will turn its proposal into a final decision.

To recap: On 1st April 2010, Ofcom announced a proposal to reduce MTRs from April 2011. The drop in MTRs will take place over a period of 4 years, coming down to 2.5p in April 2011, 1.5p in April 2012, 0.9p in April 2013 and eventually arriving at 0.5p in April 2014. The proposal means that consumers will have to wait until 2014 to experience the full benefit of lower termination rates. In comparison, the European Commission wants MTRs to fall to 0.5p by the end of 2012.

We hope that Ofcom will confirm the plans laid out in the proposal – or better – and not buckle under pressure from the ‘big three’ operators. They, unlike Three and BT, love high MTRs as they bring in a huge amount of revenue as well as prevent competitive pressure from lower prices.

In the run up to the announcement, please do continue to check the blog for further information. We will be communicating with all of you that signed the petition and asked for more information as soon as we have any updates.

In the meantime, I would like to thank you once again for supporting the campaign. We now have over 161,000 signatories from UK consumers to the petition and we will continue to grow until the changes we want are implemented.

On behalf of the team, I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

I know we have had this conversation previously sbiddle, while there is definitely no 1-to-1 relationship between wholesale and retail pricing, there is definitely a relationship.
All retail companies look to cover their costs, many will simply take a wholesale cost add a fixed margin and then sell that item on. Others may have a number of different wholesale service rates that change every 2 months, or are far more complex in their billing than the average user would want and so they focus on covering their expenses overall plus a margin. To do this they need to use statistics, market trends, historical data etc. to model their cost exposure. They also work out the level of revenue or profit they desire and the build their own pricing to suit. There is no 1-to-1 relationship between individual costs and the retail rates but there is a direct relationship to the exposure a company has, and that is driven by the cost of interconnecting, roaming, etc. By lowering the MTR the exposure a company has for 1000 Voice minutes to any network come down, therefore the bundle could be sold at a lower retail cost or the bundle could be extended to include more minutes (e.g. 2000 voice minutes) for the same bundle price.
