NZtechfreak: Sure, for lots of users less will be perfectly adequate, just not for me. Naturally I care far less about others needs than my own (in this case at any rate).

I'm usually between 1GB and 2GB for the month. I often forget to turn the wifi on at all. I have done 2.7GB in one month. If I get worried, I guess i could throw my 2 degrees SIM in and buy a GB for $20.

johnr: Some nice changes are coming soon,

Please do not ask me what they are or I will be on the John Key Ski team

Hi Johnr

your comments above in context lead me to think there were new talk/data plans in the wings, so far there is only mention of a text change, is there further plan changes yet to be announced?

NonprayingMantis: the lower limits you are looking at (250MB etc) are the actual limits for the plans.

the 3GB limit is a promotion only. It has been going on for some time (about 18 months I think) and can be removed at any time both for new AND existing customers.

I've been on the 3GB promo since July 2009 on the Smart3 plan I signed up for to get an HTC Magic android phone for only $519.

Seems so long ago now...... :-)

I'm hoping the 3gb promo stays put for some time longer as I have just migrated across from a brief stay at 2 Degrees onto VF Smart 2 and finding it hard to stay off my SGSII so all the extra data will no doubt come in handy lol

I remember thinking the 3GB promo was about the same time the iPad came out with a 3GB data option for cheap.

I had the feeling this "promo" was intended to prevent smartphone users from signing up for iPad plans (and micro-SIMs) to use in their smartphones (with SIM adapters), then ditching the iPads on TradeMe.

I'm pretty sure the iPad sims are locked to only connect with an iPad IMEI.

This is incorrect. Original SIM's were as Vodafone bowed down to Apple who required them to do this.

It has not been the case for a long time now and all newer SIM's don't have this restriction.

I just read the terms and conditions page
http://help.vodafone.co.nz/app/answers/detail/a_id/11290
I must have misunderstood, the sims aren't locked but if the network detects an ipad sim being used with a non-ipad device they can teminate the connection

  • The Vodafone Data Plan for iPad (“the data Add On”) may only be accessed on or through an Apple® iPad WiFi + 3G device, using a Vodafone MicroSIM for iPad. The data Add-On may not be used on or with any other device. In the event that the data Add-On is used through another device, Vodafone reserves the right to terminate the data Add-On connection without notice.

The original micro SIM's were locked, hence lots of people who upgraded to new iPad's bleating to Vodafone that they had to buy new SIM cards.
