Doubt it....But there is a commercial link between running online advertising and paying for hosting fees.  The web server you're reading this from doesn't come for free.  Hence why MF sells online advertising on his site to keep the lights on.  To say anything else is opening up a can of ban-hammer.


We are not even running advertising for TelstraClear, so even that doesn't count.

mattbush: I have had this for many years where I have not had a phone line. I am disapointed to see that Geekzone is allowing advertising on its site in this manner especially since this is more smoke and mirrors from TCL.

Is there a commercial link between geekzone and TCL?


I don't really see a problem with users from ISP's posting what are effectively press releases on Geekzone. 

Plenty of users that are ISP staff have done so in the past, most recent example Snap un-metered weekends.  Don't see any real harm in it, it's actually quite useful to get advance warning of what the ISP is doing/promoting.

You can get monitored alarms that use sim cards, been available for a decade at least

Am i correct in understanding that the cable internet network will fail under a power outage? Due to pole mounted amplifiers?

With naked dsl, as long as you can power your devices (router & ata), Chorus's exchanges have UPS's and therefore you can still make voip calls when the power goes out in your suburb/city

I would like to convert my parents to naked cable, the price is right, but they are slack at keeping their cellphones charged so leaving them without emergency phone access is unacceptable

There is no simple binary answer to this. It all depends on their location within the node and whether an amplifier is required for the upstream.

The FTTN copper networks for both TCL and Telecom are fully powered by the cabinets/exchanges so do have some slight advantages over the cable network.

Im in the industry, you dont need a phone line to monitor an alarm, it can be done over IP,GPRS,RADIO And SMS

Assuming they have a car get them a cheapie inverter off Trademe and they can charge the phone with the car (or if it's a newer phone with USB, get a USB adapter for the car.  Then in an emergency even if they have forgotten to charge the phone the backup is to plug it into the car to get power.
