Every other ISP in New Zealand gets iSky delivered in, mostly, Auckland. (There are nodes in Wellington and Christchurch too)

Telstraclear gets iSky from Los Angeles.

I would note that that article is almost 8 years old. So I think it's a bit hard to say if that is still relevant?

Maybe someone at TCL can comment?

Also, not sure that explains why users on other ISPs than TCL also experience buffering issues?

Sure...if it is still accurate. But 8 years is a looooonnnnnggg time in the world of networks and ISPs.

Do you know for sure that is the case?

Also, again I don't believe it answers the users who are experiencing problems on other ISPs with buffering (i.e. vodafone, xnet as cited earlier in this thread)

Telstraclear still do not peer openly at the APE and WIX, and this is the reason why their customers get served iSky from Los Angeles instead of from a CDN node in Auckland which is most likely to be the cause of issues.

With regards to other ISPs, no idea, there are too many other variables to say "oh it's probably this". But from what I can tell these are few and far between in comparison.

But even if it is streamed from LA why can I still (and another person has said on this thread they can too) stream via a VPN in miami from Hulu no problems at all. Yeah I will get the very occasional buffer for 2-10s at the start but after that it is fine for the duration of the video.

fair point...if this is the issue, I'm wondering if there is some sort of caching in the route that is causing the problem...not the longer route.

fair point...if this is the issue, I'm wondering if there is some sort of caching in the route that is causing the problem...not the longer route.

It's not the length of the route, it's the fact that Orcon will only have very limited amount of transit provisioned for that route back to Telstraclear from LA. It's exactly the same as what Citylink does to Telecom/Telstraclear for not peering openly at APE / WIX etc.

If Telstraclear wants their users to be able to stream iSky then Telstraclear can peer openly with Orcon, but it's too easy for them to rather charge Orcon and all others ISPs for national transit, it's a huge cash cow.
There is a power struggle between content providers and the end users ISPs. It's a dick move by Telstraclear and also Telecom not to peer, so good on Orcon for doing this.

Hopefully more content providers will move their content away from the two big guys.

I tried isky tonight on my parent's TCL DSL connection (12mb adsl2+), impossible to watch live rugby...will be lucky to get 3-4 seconds of video before it re-buffers.

Tried watching the cricket today on what is usually a very stable snap connection but was lucky to get 3-4 seconds before a buffer as well.

It may have been the connection rather than iSky today as a few other things were downloading much slower than normal.

Will investigate further.

Infinitely better for me tonight with this India v Australia one-dayer. No buffering at all.

Have they got us all to the point where it only craps out for what you'd presume are the heaviest traffic times (rugby and Black Caps ODIs)?

Another Telstraclear user here finding isky unwatchable... Have tried a few times at different times of the day and nothing major on.
