Loyalty is what you give to your family or best friend, sports team etc, not your utilities.

When dealing with me, you couldn't be more wrong if you try. This is why I like dealing with companies where I get personal attention and deal with the same person.

I have a wide range of choices for services and can often screw a better price if I really want to. Yes, some days I'm price conscious, but other days I deal with a company because I like the people.

I'm still with Telstra, for example, because I actually like the tech guys I know. While the upload speed is important to me as well, I'd much prefer to work with my providers to improve things rather than just leave everytime something doesn't work as well as I'd like... having said that, I hate dealing with the over seas call centers, though I note they are getting better.

Otaku: I joined TelstraClear a week back with new plan of $75/mo which includes 40gig+Homeline (with AKL wide free calling to landlines)+Wireless modem/router. The term is 12 months,w ith ETC as $199 and $80 joining fee. First two mont rent is free. So in all, new customers save $60. The mode/router is NetComm RTA1025W (N series). Pretty happy with speeds at 1.5 MB/s. :)

Otaku I think it's a little more then that:

$75 X 2 (months free) = $150 + $150 (for the modem) + 12 months X $30 savings (the cost of 40Gb usage which is free for 12 months) = $660 savings

Thanks for that. I now feel happier with my choice.

i logged in here specifically to see if this topic had come up. i figured it wouldn't be long till other companies would be offering similar deals that would make it, to me, worth changing despite the hassle. good to read TC are reasonable enough to give the deal to existing, out of contract customers. :)

Hi Steve, depending on the phone/broadband/TV package you're already on and which you want to move to you may be eligible for a reduced or waived installation charge. Not sure other providers would have been anywhere near so accommodating.

My personal experience, including 'research' (ie people moaning about other ISP's service), suggests TCL are significantly above the average over all. I have experienced excellent service, and friends / family have experienced abysmal service from TCL, at times. I do nostalgically reflect on the outstanding service we used to get from Clear Communications in the 90s, and Paradise.Net in the early zeros.
The main thing that keeps us with TCL is an excellent product. I only tend to require significant service once every year or two.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Is someone able to tell me how good the free router that comes with TelstraClears $75 homeplan package is (i.e., will it work upstairs in a two storey house). If not, can someone provide a recommendation of a cheap(ish) router that will work? Cheers.

Can't help you in ADSL land (sorry about that), but generally recommend the Ubiquity range. The Airrouter is a good, cheap, model: http://www.gowifi.co.nz/coming-soon-new-products/ubiquiti-airrouter-802.11n-wireless-router.html
For a very elegant, and easily expandable, model, can't beat the UniFi range: http://www.gowifi.co.nz/ubiquiti-networks/ubiquiti-networks-radios/ubiquiti-unifi-mini-802.11n-access-point.html

I'm sure there will be others with views!

It comes with a Netcomm (aka Dynalink) unit if I recall rightly, should be solid broadcom chipset based.

Otherwise the TP-LINK TD-W8960N is good bang for buck ~$99 from Playtech or Computer Lounge

I signed up to the $75 deal today. Free router, 2 months free. There was no mention of $80 joining fee.
As long as the router has similar wifi coverage as the Thompson 585 I have now, I will be happy.

AirRouter performance is good if you're within a few metres. Beyond that it's terrible. If you pull it apart to examine the ~1cm aerial you'll understand why.

TelstraClear: Hi

I recently Signed up with telstraclear after being with Telecom for 6+ years and I have to say my speed has improved quite considerbly but I was dissapointed with the free modem I received. I was suppose to receive the NB304N which looked like a really good modem N Spec Wireless and USB to plug my external HDD... Instead I got a NB6PLUS4W which is only G wireless and wont support an external hdd.. I rang the support team and they tried to tell me it was the same spec. So I let them know it wasnt and that I needed The above mentioned features and they said they will send out the new model once they are back in stock but could not give me any idea of an ETA I was wondering if The Telsra Clear rep on here might be able to give an ETA on when these are back in stock.... Thanks
