[It was standard practise to changeover the POTS from telecom to Saturn as part of the install, which would always get interesting because the Saturn network was TOO good compared to the low-power telecom network.

TOO good in what way?

Telecom had reduced the power on the copper lines over time, which contradicted the spec for deploying voice services but worked in practise so who cared? when you control the network you control the standards and operational practices.

Along rolls Saturn and starts switching over to the shiny new switch which does follow the - higher power - standards, and a few houses were accidentally set on fire somehow. In ISDN land, again the modern standards were followed but did not support a requirement for Full Noise (why would you on a digital circuit?), which meant switching from telecom to clear created some problems for customer PBX's that could not be cheaply resolved - and thus the circuit was switched back and wholesaled instead.

Don't you just love telco tech?

Traditionally NZPO phone design regulated voice level based on line current. Longer lines meant lower current so levels increased to compensate for line loss. This became a problem when exchanges designed for high population close to the swich had constant current fed line circuits. The phones saw low current, assumed long line and boosted levels. This was never a problem for the NEAX that was a 48v feed.

Erratic voice levels became a problem on international calls as high levels got clipped meaning the echo suppression was working with dissimilar wave forms. Later Telecom phones dropped regulation and had lower levels.

I never heard of any houses set on fire by phone lines. I did do some experimenting with 230v contact at house to see what happened to NEAX. The line circuit eventually had a small fire that lasted about 5 minutes. Only a problem if papers were left in rack.

Just got my first bill since the change from HFC to Fibre Everyday ... it includes all the appropriate credits for the new deal, but also an Account Charge of $14.95 !!

I can't find any reference to that being there, so anyone else met this?

Modem postage & handling fee?

If so, I don't see any mention on their FAQ page https://one.nz/hfcchanges so hopefully they informed you...

The SmartWiFi modem postage & handling fee is listed on the broadband plans page
https://one.nz/broadband/internet-plans/

I noticed last week they brought back the 12 month $10 discount too, so wonder if they need to change the HFC offer to $20 off or actually offer $30...

Just had a look at https://one.nz/hfcchanges/ and no mention of that charge, so maybe done in error.   I'd be calling to get it reversed.

Had this on my bill and my previous discount of $30 was a debit instead. Lucky when I phone I got a local NZer and got it sorted pretty quickly. They added a credit for the $14.95 and another $60 to sort out the discount.

He said this has been common for the HFC to Fibre switch overs.

Thanks all ... I'd left a WhatsApp message before going out, so if no answer by tomorrow, I'll get on the phone.

UPDATE:  Bit of a DOH! moment .... if I had read the entire bill right down to the bottom of page 3, I'd have seen that the $14.95 charge for delivering the router had then been credited.

Since coax isn’t used anymore, is it possible for the installer to reuse the existing coax entry point for fibre — even if that means widening the hole? Has anyone had this done, and did it work out smoothly?

A few variations of this theme are discussed on pages 30 and 31 of this thread! TL:DR: Probably, so long as the coax is not still there. It gets complicated quickly.

Elderly person who i help is waiting for HFC change and the fibre ONT to be repaired at his address. They gave him a March date, however he has just received a bill from One NZ for $130 where he normally pays $82. My Chorus man said a few people were complaining about this. Has anyone experienced this and what was the outcome.

@Eva888 ... Sounds like the usual HFC of $72 plus $10 phone line.

As Linux suggests, probably around the time of annual contract renewal so reverted to full price?

Should call (ha ha) OneNZ and explain that HFC transfer to Fibre is in process, and to please ensure old plan stays in place until change over.
