phantomdb: Just been hunting for a http type application so i can extract thr http chat for further info, not having any GOOD luck tracking something down.

Depending on what you're after I'd suggest Wireshark or perhaps Fiddler2 of you don't use Firefox or Chrome which have plugins to monitor Http headers etc

Im trying to Cut and Paste info etc to supply this thread is where im going with this, not after packet sniffing etc

TelstraClear: Hi all, as I've noted in other threads on GZ, there's not much we can do without some specific examples that the team can test. What sites are you having trouble with? When was it? What else can you tell us about the behaviour you are experiencing.

For example, the sites mentioned in the OP are loading fine.

You might want to look at your You Tube feed as well. It's been crap for about the last 3 weeks.

I use these DNS addresses:

203.97.78.43 and 203.97.78.44.

These have been loaded in my router (DLink DIR 655) since the middle of last year, but You Tube has been crap for the last two - three weeks for me. (Central Wellington, Cable, 60GB lightspeed plan)

When trying to view You Tube video's they either dont start at all, try to start and fail with the You Tube !, start and stop continuously with the spinner, but the load bar not advancing at all. Also the play bar is often faster than the load bar and stalls the video.

Some of the download speeds for videos are little better than dial up speed. 10 - 40 Kbps in stead of the usual 300 - 500 Kbps.

Running the You Tube Speed test shows in the last month (20/03/2012 to 25/04/2012) my You Tube average streaming speed has been 3.39 Mbps compared the the average speed for Telstra Clear, Wellington, NZL, and Global being 5.5 - 6 Mbps.

This is using IE9, FF, and Google Chrome (all lastest versions) and on three seperate computers running Windows 7, and signed in to my You Tube account.

The computers are set to obtain the DNS Server address and IP address automatically from the router.

No IP address or DNS address is set or shown in the computer network/internet settings.

The router has the DHCP enabled and assigns the computers a specific IP address in the 192.168.0.190 - 199 range. I have set the router to give each computer/device the same IP address every time they are started, and turned on MAC filtering to limit what computers/devices can conect to my network.

When I download You Tube videos I get the expected download speed, anything from 10 - 20 Mbits per second using a You Tube Video downloader programme, but viewing/streaming the video and it is lucky to get 100Kbits/sec, usually its 20 - 40 Kbits/sec

It's quicker to download the videos and watch them offline rather than trying to watch them online at the moment.

All other Internet access is fine, with the expected speeds for downloads, accessing other websites, etc.
There is something wrong with Telstra Clears You Tube streaming video set up....

Yeah I know, I should call the help desk, but after 10+ years of Telstra Clear claiming they would fix the totally CRAP service from the help desk (waiting 40 - 60 minutes to have your call answered, and getting the robotic help desk script kiddies INSIST that the only way to fix the problem is to send a technician in 4 - 7 working days, only to have the technician to say there is no problem with your modem or cable connection, it's at the Telstra Clear end) rules that out as any sort of solution.

following on from the above post i notice a VAST difference when i use freinds dsl connections that its just faster, and the wife can vouch for it and does inform me when things are slower than usual as for times and dates etc surrounding this i have none of recent.
For me its using my android phone at home and finding the load times middle of the road, and then taking the same phone and connecting to freinds dsl etc only to find load times vastly better. (NOTE im on cable in christchurch)

i've been doing testing using a benchmarking plugin for chrome - and have found cable to be slower than dsl, although i haven't got access to a cable connection very often.

you can do your own testing with:

You have to install the plugin, then you change your shortcut to chrome and add "--enable-benchmarking" to the end. then there's a timer in the top right next to the spanner, you then get your preexisting url list and copy and paste it into the window.

I've been doing various testing for over a year, and have found a few sites changed their start urls etc, but mostly I think things are reasonably consistent.

What I've found is that although you can only take benchmarks with a grain of salt - in my testing without clearing cache, after doing run through, then doing subsequent tests that Telstraclear cable is indeed slower than DSL - but not by a /lot/. Partially it seems to be that an extra 5th of a second can be perceivable - and if a connection feels really slow, then load times are over 2 seconds, if it seems really fast load times are something like 1.0 to 1.3 seconds, and if it seems average, they're 1.5 to
1.7.

I think part of it is how quickly stuff appears to start showing - and that there seems to be some delays with cable, which very well could be related to things like Telstraclear's proxy having to a dns lookup after you've already done a dns lookup.

And some sites can consistently be more variable than others based upon ISP - bbc is one such example. Google tends to be pretty consistent. And some sites like nzherald seem to have spikes every now and then irrespective of ISP.

With bbc for example a good load time is 1.3 seconds - a bad time 3 seconds.

Also I found a pptp tunnel did indeed improve performance -- although it made speedtest.net test go slower. (probably due to tunnel overhead)

try changing http links to https, and you may be able to start with https earlier than you normally would and bypass telstraclear's cache farm.

We are experiencing issues too - ran a Windows 7 Network Diagnostics test and found:-

"Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding. Contact your network administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).

Windows can't communicate with the device or resource (DNS server). The computer or service you are trying to reach might be temporarily unavailable. If the device or resource is nearby and you have access to it, make sure it is turned on and connected to the network."

I am using the correct TCL DNS though...

I am using the correct TCL DNS though...

if the primary dns server isn't working properly you're going to find a lot of pauses before connecting to sites... unfortunately if you set dns to google, telstraclear's cache can break due to limitations on their network architecture where they don't allow traffic to come back via NZ if connecting to an international site.

I've been experiencing this a lot lately. And yeah, tonight I'd say about half of web page requests are hanging. Chrome sometimes says it's a DNS issue (though tonight it's just saying it 'can't find <wherever>'), but it happens on OpenDNS servers too. Pings to the sites are fine. Same thing happens when connected directly to the modem. Wait a minute and they sometimes load, but with css or images missing. Facebook a prime example.

TCL Cable btw.

Seriously pulling my hair out over this. Not sure what I'm paying for
