As consumers, it strikes me we could be in for some exciting times. ...and that's what the ComCom is all about isn't it?!
What makes you think after spending big dough (probably via considerable leveraged debt) they'd break decades of habit and rush in with mad deals. As Paul points out below they're already dominating the key high value market segment; if anything they'd use such a deal to consolidate then charge accordingly and remain the marvellous little cash cow of Global VF.

While shedding a significant number of low-end prepaid customers it has been able, at the same time, to gain many more valuable postpaid customers.Revenue-wise, it is twice the size of its nearest rival Telecom – Vodafone’s revenue market share is 62% as against Telecom’s 31%. Telecom has been able to improve its position, but, because of strategies such as bundling, 2degrees is stuck at around the 7%-8% of revenue market share, even slightly less than we estimated last year. And unless significant intervention takes place there are no indications that this situation is going to change over the next few years.

Meanwhile we see Chorus has cronyed a wonderfully anti-consumer contract with CFH (half the required installation service of the local fibre companies). And the stalwart, highly capable consumer champion Ross Patterson is most likely out on his bum; firmly ejected by Skynetz friend good ole National. I'd say the consumer could well be in for a return to the rough ride'n ripoff past.
