StarBlazer:

DonGould: ya... not helpful for those of us who actually use the internet!

Moving on from the condescending tone!

My point being - have you actually asked TCL whether they can do anything for you?

pffft... I so hate the written word some days!!!

Sorry, my choice of words was poor and not intended to be condescending or offensive.

See:  Simon Lyall's comments here:  http://lists.ausnog.net/pipermail/ausnog/2012-August/014512.html

"Note to sales guys: I'm not going to be buying in the next month or two so please don't mail me the hard sell, if you have good prices online that I've missed then tell me. For this sort of purchase I work on the principle of going with vendors who list their prices online and do things automatically to keep costs low rather than building in salesman's margins."

I'm not interested in getting some sort of special deal by calling in a favour (not that I have any at TCL I'm quite sure), I'm interesting in us all benefiting.

Or did you just mean picking up the phone and actually telling them I'm interested in more value?

I see no point in calling their over seas based call center to have a chat with some CSR who has less access to top level TCL management than I do.

Gary, CG, DV, Tim, Rob and a few others all follow this site actively.  I have no doubt at all that they've read all my comments, given some consideration to the issues I've pointed out and will make business choices they think is best for all their shareholder - and I have two personally signed letters from their CEO, Allan, assuring me that this is the case and how they choose to operate.

With direct respect to my own service, the CEO has invited my direct contact if I have any issues or questions, however, other than more data at a more reasonable price, which is what everyone here is asking for, I know for well that the HFC network in Christchurch can't do any more for me than what it's already doing.

I know that they could put a VDSL dslam in the local cabinet and run a better product that I actually want, but the ROI on a VDSL deslam for 1 customer would be so high that it's not worth wasting anyone's time even asking.

Per:  http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/company-info/corporate-social-responsibility.cfm

"provide good stewardship of the environment - first and foremost by conservation (i.e., by increasing efficiency in the way we use resources), reducing operating costs, and minimising our environmental footprint,"

It would make sense that they extend fibre down the 305m from their cabinet to my building.  But I really did give up trying to 'ask them that directly' after 12 emails and two phone calls that just got me so hot under the collar that I told them I'm willing to pay $65/month for 100/100... to which they laughed and never rang me back with an answer after being told "I'll ask and get back to you".

However given they've run such little amount of fibre to their cabinets, I suspect that they just don't have any capacity in the cabinet to join the new fibre to.

The only problem with using the HFC is the upload speed is just way to slow still for what I want, which could be fixed by just changing the settings in the BRAS, and I can't get IP addresses that I often need.

For what I want to do, it would even make sense just to put more Cisco modems on the cable to deliver each IP address, but at $105/month for an IP address with 10mbit speed, that's just a little silly.

Why they designed I network that can only terminate 1 IPv4 address per end point and no IPv6 at all, when they did the last BRAS upgrade, I don't know.... I'm way to scared to ask that question for fear of just offending way to many people.

Per:  http://www.telstraclear.co.nz/company-info/corporate-social-responsibility.cfm

"contribute resources - people, technology, products and services - to support the communities in which we operate and the needs of the larger society"

Did they not think that we might actually take them seriously and want to run a technology business on the end of their network?!

See Jake Anderson's comments...

"If you can get 100/40 with 1TB of bandwidth from internode for $164.95. Do you really need to bother with a datacenter? ;-> Put one set of servers at my place and another at the bosses, and call it done lol.

It would be rather more environmentally friendly at least."

(my bold, the aunog mail list archive doesn't do bold).

Refer back to Simon Lyall's comments at the head of this message, he's wanting to host content but has just give up on New Zealand.

So in closing...

Again StarBlazer, I do appologise if my comments came across as condescending.

I see what you're saying with respect to TCL helping the bottom end of the market, that didn't escape me either.

D

DonGould:I don't know what your back story is, but I'm not going to argue that TCL isn't sick....

Have a search around to see why I feel the way I do about the company.

Waaait a minute. Isn't 10GB*500% 50GB?
They're saying you get 60GB up from 10GB?

EDIT: Also, "40GB into 150GB" should be "40GB into 200GB" if it's a 500% increase.

Someone at TCL failed maths :P

it says 500% more

500% of 10Gb is 50GB,so you get 50GB MORE than 10GB, which is a total of 60GB.

right up until the 12 months ends and you start getting billed $115.....

Looks like telsra are going to lose another customer. Called and said I was not happy with the plans I was offered after 5 years, and I was going to another provider with a better deal for naked internet for less.

The best offer i get is to pay 115 for the warp speed with a free phone line on a contract. Thats 40 more than I already pay.

Bit disappointing really, since I always hold out thinking soon they will pay some attention to their existing customers.

Likewise, they tried to upsell to the 100mbit (which I'm not interesting in), or a plan with a thing called a landline, whatever that is ;) Salesperson who rang was shocked that we want more than 90gig a month...
