BlueShift: I was having problems with my cap being blown after a couple of weeks. I managed to trace the cause though - it was because about thirteen years ago, we had a baby boy.

Ain't that the truth! We were easily fitting within our 60GB cap. Then our kids (14 and 11) discovered the joys of streaming YouTube on their iPods. We now sit at around 70-80GB. Thankfully our datacap was recently doubled to 120GB, which should see us right for the near future.

We were just starting to regularly blow out our 20GB cap when they doubled it up to 40GB. That worked for about 2 months, then consumption rose to meet the new ceiling.

Arghck, why does NZ persist with this archaic data limit structure! As a ex-pat Brit I was used to flat rate all you can eat. But as a non heavy use adult couple we had survived quite fine on 20G P/M.....until now. Damn it Apple, what are you up too....

hio77: might pay to have a look over on the vodafone forum, i notice their meter was playing up again, ironically the meter "recorded" usage over 2x what our line is possible of (at sync rates)....

last i heard from vodafone they were looking into it, however looked at my meter a few hours ago, and the last 3 days had been zeroed off, so ild assume a problem has been found...

vodafone do have issues with their metering sometimes, i suggest you run software to monitor usage, if theres a clear difference in the metering, give them a call, they generally fix it all up.

with the addition of macs in your network, im not sure on the best tool to do this, may come down to manual calculations..

with the addition of mobile devices, consoles etc metering can be rather hard however..

Okay so having received the data report from Vodafone I accepted that it was a problem on our end and started digging into what might be the cause. A number of helpful suggestions regarding systems/network monitoring combined with a investigation on the web had me leaning toward it being a problem with the mailbox syncing on my partners Mac. Not wanting to mess with the settings to much this was as far as I got.

Then it occurred to me that considering we had gone over our data limit and should be in lower bandwidth territory things were still loading nice and fast. I log in and go check the Vodafome site and lo and behold we've had the last 5 days zeroed off. Whilst this is nice I will be keeping a careful eye on what the suspect Mac is up to. The reality is I still don't know exactly where and what the problem was!

I run 3 Macs and have not yet had this kind of problem.

I do run Eset Cybersecurity on them all, as I no longer buy into the 'Macs don't get viruses' idea. They can and do - albeit less of them generally.

I recommend running Eset or something similar to at least ensure as far as reasonably possible that no nasties are playing on your machine. Also make sure you have Gate Keeper preferences and Firewall preferences set to their securest options as well.

Vodafone had a glitch in their usage meter this last week. I've got 3 or 4 days showing as zero data usage even though I know we used about 2GB per day.
