Could someone please explain what exactly "regulated speed requirements" are (and when they were set). I saw something posted above but I assume I must have misread or misunderstood it - unless of course the requirements were set 10+ years ago?

You can, if you're willing to pay for a whole cabinet in areas where the cabinet is not on the RBI upgrade list, going price is about $200-$400k per cabinet depending on what needs to be hooked up, going from a Conklin can be slightly more expensive due to the fact most of the time there's no fibre in the area and this is very expensive to lay. Chorus need to get the money back from their investment in the NZ infrastructure since they're a company too.

In areas where you're not getting wired RBI broadband, then Vodafone's RBI version of Wireless Broadband or a Wireless WISP is your only option for high speed internet.

To the OP - if you're willing to pay for it Unleash should be able to help you out with a high speed P2P link for internet, give them a call on 0800 750 250.

If I was willing to pay 200K+ I could buy a 4ha block of land next door with fibre already connected so even after a few dozen tui's I dont think Ill be paying anyone 200k to upgrade the cabnet. Besides if I did I suspect they would still want me to pay my internet bill even though I have just paid a large chunk of their costs for them. Sure im not adverse to paying something but that much is dreaming

Am I not correct in thinking the equiptment in these cabnets can support multipul 16mbit feeds? If so why is there not more then 1 feed connected to it?

Any way ive had enough of the slow net tonight - current ping times to Chch 500ms and speed test wont load and im the only person using the net, not even sure if this will post without timing out.

Because that's what's in the ground? What's in the ground is older fibre optic technology running some ATM transport which has to be shared with all the ASAMs in the area.

As above,

Unleash should be able to help you out with a high speed P2P link for internet, give them a call on 0800 750 250 to see what they're able to do. This is possibly the cheapest solution for you, they're a business ISP so you'll be getting premium bandwidth from them via Wireless P2P. The ASAM's normally have 8x 2mbit ATM connections totalling 16mbit, but this really depends on the cabinet and how many users it serves etc.

Hi Humvee, fellow Geekzoners,

I'm the owner of Unleash and have just been pointed at this thread by another member in light of our name being mentioned. I think your problem has been well unpicked by many people already, and I agree that mostly likely you have severe backhaul contention. This could be a combination of too many users in the area as well as perhaps some dropoff in the amount of backhaul available somewhere between your cabinet and the centre of the Chorus universe due to a fault or even a decision to reduce capacity.

There are several things I suggest you try:

-Contact Amuri Networks, they have a lot of coverage in Canterbury, though I'm not certain about your particular area. If they can serve you, this is likely your best option by some way.

-Churn the circuit to an ISP with a bulldog in the support team who can press Chorus hard for an improvement in the status quo. Your chances are not wildly good but as you say the service used to work acceptably there's some chance you may get that back if your ISP really goes in to bat for you.

-Look into getting a fibre Ethernet service, perhaps shared around three or four neighbours to get the price down towards the cost of DSL. If fibre goes past your door the install cost may not be as bad you'd expect, though monthly costs are undeniably a step up from DSL.

-Look at getting a private last mile P2P digital microwave link built. This would be cheaper than fibre at around the 10Mbps mark and would perform similarly well. You're reasonably far out but it's not impossible that a link could be created from the port hills in Christchurch.

Good luck - there'll be a solution out there somewhere.

I guess it was to much to hope for - about a week after posting here, our connection was much better for about 2 weeks or so, I was hoping someone who saw this thread had managed to tweak or change something behind the scenes, but it looks like the old problems are returning once again

The person leaching all the bandwidth probably went on holiday..

Their should be different pricing for UBA and EUBA connections, but our Commerce Commission doesn't understand technology very well.

They also dont understand that Chorus needs money to roll out UFB and it doesnt just happen.

Hi,

Can anyone look up cabinet KWI/AA and advise what it is and what service I can expect from this?

I get between 1 and 5 Mbps using this. Is DSL1 and I get frequent disconnects due to dsl sync cuts.

Curious if this cabinet is likely to ever be updated?

I can't find KWI/AA - but the cabinets around that general area are 5mbit so ASAMS much like the OP. Sounds like you've got internal wiring issues and need to get a master filter installed.

Thanks. The KWI/AA is labelled on the front. I have a master filter and named broadband so no other phones connected.

Is there an exchange in Kirwee? Any chance it would be upgraded or DSL2?
