lchiu7: I just moved back to cable today and the installer told me to use 203.96.152.4 and 203.96.152.12. Looking at this thread it seems they are not right?

I am experiencing the issues that folks are reporting in this thread. Sites that don't resolve the first time and require trying again, CSS not loading etc.  While speedtest shows the speed is much faster than the VDSL I replaced, having poor DNS resolution in really annoying.

Should I be using 203.97.78.43 and 203.97.78.44?

PS

At least the transparent proxy isn't breaking Unblock anymore which is nice.

Hi lchiu7,

Thanks for posting this - Could you please send me a PM with your account number so I can get feedback passed on to our service partners?

these DNS issues are driving me absolutely nuts... it's extremely frustrating to say the least

anyone got any other DNS servers we can use?
can't use Telecom DNS it seems?
google's DNS servers aren't recommended if you're in NZ...

so what other NZ DNS servers can we use that aren't vodafone/telstraclear?

I am using UnoTelly DNS at the moment and have not seen adverse effects - previously using a third party DNS would break lots of things because of the proxy but it seems not the case now. You can always try Google DNS or OpenDNS...

On my Acer C720 Chromebook the Internet Connection Diagnosis app told me the DNS was too slow, i have always had it on the recommended Telstraclear/vodafone ones but the wailt for the web pages to start to load was getting really bad.
I switched to the Google ones and instantly the pages started to load faster, this is a bad look Vodafone !

This must make chained CNAME dns lookups painful.  For example:

mail.yahoo.com -> login.yahoo.com -> ats.login.lgg1.b.yahoo.com -> ats.member.g02.yahoodns.net -> au.ats.member.g02.yahoodns.net -> 124.108.97.210

tough luck if your lookup fails at any one of those points

Looks like the reason for the terrible performance suddenly was posted on the NZNOG news groups this morning:

"Vodafone New Zealand will start blocking external access to the recursive DNS servers of the former TelstraClear network to non-customers as of July 3rd 2014.  Some of our former customers or other users with Vodafone modems may have the IP addresses of our DNS servers set up on their devices. With that in mind, we'd like to notify you that from midnight 01 July 2014 we will stop providing DNS resolution for external non-Vodafone users, resulting in such customers being unable to browse the internet.

Their Name-Servers must be taking a thrashing and are struggling to keep up with queries... Hopefully this action solves the problem and everything will be sorted from early July :)

I'm having exact same issues with Vodafone currently, pages not loading, have to refresh multiple times.  It is just so frustrating, going to try OpenDNS or Google DNS until this is fixed.

Yes - seems to be getting worse for me if anything in Kapiti - certainly getting frustrating!
Here's hoping the changes being made will improve this.

I've changed my DNS servers to OpenDNS, and looking good so far, but will see how it goes for over the next few days though.

I changed to Google 8888 about a week ago and is very good, might change back to cable dns later, but seems better with Google dns.

Tonight has been the worst. The wife has been telling me to fix-it and stop mucking around with the internet. I try and explain it's nothing to with me.

As discussed in another topic Vodafone is closing its resolved to non-Vodafone access. This might reduce load but with introduction of unlimited plans I wonder if their network is not feeling the pressure.

Its a bit sad really...the VF guys are real quiet on this issue and yet its affecting so many of their customers. I guess there isn't much of a marketing spin that can be put on this plain/simple bad performance.
