I'm still having YouTube issues. It can take minutes on end for videos to start loading in sometimes. :\ When I'm waiting, Chrome's net internals shows a bunch of seemingly hanged connect jobs on the offending socket:

Investigating further shows a helluva lot of timeouts:

YouTube's redirector mapping (properly) returns telstraclear-wlg1 (203.96.144.0/20). Usually when a video's going to sit there for a long time before loading, the stream host shows something ending in sn-uxanug5jax5g-fabe, but then goes blank until it connects (sometimes after 3+ minutes!).

I'm at my wit's end here.

Vodafone must be the worst ISP in NZ by a mile. So many naff issues, many of which have been going on for years, where to start in listing them all?
At least mobile and the help desk seem "alright" at the moment.

I'm surprised so many people in this forum and who are "in the know" persist with them.

Sorry I can't contribute more to this thread. Hope you get it all sorted

I am with Vodafone cable because the option here is ADSL 10 Mbps (which I have as a backup and in the evenings works really well). Fibre is being installed right now (they are digging the street just in front of our driveway) and if things don't get better by the time fibre is available...

@Kodiack I take you are using Vodafone Cable DNS server settings and not 3rd party?

Use the @janicel in your post and she can look further into it and she will get an email about the post

I see you asking if we are using Vodafone DNS servers often, you make it sound like if we are not using Vodafone DNS then its our problem, or am I just mistaken? What is the stance here? Do we not meant to use 3rd party DNS? If Vodafone offer a Global mode then I would use them. I also have more issues on Vodafone DNS than 3rd Party.

@Scotty1986 if you use 3rd party DNS servers then customers may not get the benefits of the black box Google hardware installed in our network and also bypass local CDNs

@Kodiack are you using a 3rd party DNS?

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Free setup code: R587125ERQ6VE. Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

i would suggest vodafone dont/cant guarantee the speed/response of your service if you dont used their DNS servers. so its a use at your own risk kind of service

The problems that can arise from using 3rd party DNS servers are well known and have been for years.

My advice to anybody is that you should never use 3rd party DNS unless you're fully aware of the implications of doing so. A couple of years ago my stance would be that you should NEVER use 3rd party DNS because the downsides outweigh any upsides. Now that many of the CDN issues are resolved things aren't so bad, but are not perfect. Combine CDN issues with the typically much higher latency to 3rd party DNS servers and suddenly a snappy connection can become quite sluggish for browsing due to slower DNS lookups and fetching CDN content sometimes from the other side of the world rather than locally.

I think it's still safe to say that the actual user experience of somebody using a 3rd party DNS server will nearly always be worse that using your ISPs DNS. There can be advantages of using 3rd party DNS servers such as bypassing geo-blocks but an individual needs to decide for themselves what approach they want to take.

I remember when Google first started their DNS service, one of the features was that it would be faster than a lot of ISP's not because of geographic location but the fact their infrastructure was potentially superior, running on better hardware and more up to date / better software.

It depends how seriously the ISP takes their DNS service. For some of the smaller ones I'd image it's just the bare minimum to make the connections work.

You're so far off the mark it's not funny. Until Google puts some DNS infrastructure in NZ then they're always going to be slower than your ISP provided servers.

DNS is the most critical service to have available and every ISP knows this. Geekzone is great for many things, but it's an utterly terrible place (most of the time) to get advice or information about networks larger than a small business...

Most of the times we have people, like yourself, who will put things in the right perspective with the right information. So it's a good place after all.

If someone has misguided information then people like yourself has the opportunity to correct it. As you did.

My point is that, like anywhere where you find people from different backgrounds, Geekzone will have people with more or less knowledge in some specific areas. It's a place for this people to help the others.

Fair point, but it's crazy frustrating to have the same misconceptions and information spewed out like it's truth so often.  It feels like I'm King Canute trying to stem the flow of hopelessly bad information at times!

Once the topic of discussion gets into ISP level networking (at least - that's an area I can speak to) the signal to noise ratio gets pretty bad. Picking through all the info to try and identify the good stuff must be incredibly hard...

You're not alone. Many people helping get the word out there.

Don't get me started on infrastructure IT "consultants" working for multi-million dollars companies replying with "Wait for DNS to propagate".

It's everywhere.
