sbiddle: Carriers enabling VoLTE is no proof of it being successful. Carriers are deploying RCE as well.

All good - I know of a few areas that get great 2G signal and marginal-to-nil 3G.

It's inevitable there will be some places, but the reality will be there would be very few such places - from probably 2007ish onwards there were huge numbers of places that only had 3G and no GSM coverage over the years as Vodafone were really only focussing on deploying 3G for new coverage, not GSM. I can use examples of quite a few suburbs in Wellington where 3G was good but there was no GSM, simply because Vodafone didn't deploy it.

Lots and lots of areas that had no GSM have actually got it over the past couple of years as their single RAN solution was rolled out. In some areas this was done solely for telemetry and power metering.

With GSM and 3G on 900 being delivered from the same panels on single RAN sites any differences in coverage would be very minimal, and 3G will perform far better at a lower signal strength anyway.

Saw a Vodafone ad in a bus shelter today that I think said they were turning off 2G - "switch before you're ditched" or something similar. I wasn't able to read the fine print and couldn't see any further detail on this from a quick search online. Anyone know anything further?

It might actually be a Skinny ad encouraging people to leave Vodafone. I'll try to take a closer look.

I second that!

crazy part is it's kinda bordering on misleading; as we all know if your one of the lucky people to still have a phone that only works on 2G, then you will still need a new phone...
even if you decide to stay with Vodafone!

It was the Vodafone logo in the centre of the ad that threw me... In hindsight, it would be slightly odd for Vodafone to be talking about ditching their own customers.

This might generate a few calls for Vodafone. Seems like Skinny may have jumped the gun, given Vodafone haven't announced a shutdown date, or really even publicly confirmed the shutdown beyond the one Stuff article - as far as I'm aware.

I suspect that the voice side shut down could be closer than people think though GPRS data they say will be 2025.

Is this just because its a newer technology? why would carriers drop back to 2G often if this is the case? - are they just dropping back to 2G for capacity. I often see my phone drop back to 2G in marginal areas.

I only see my phone drop back on 2degrees. Usually holding on to 1 or no bars of 4g or on 3g with Vodafone. Only place I see 2g is the civic car park and that's not a fall back, it's a drop the call/data and go searching for it.
